Read 2023 Page 11

At the bottom we burst out into a laneway. Max made for the end of the lane. He cut out of sight behind a building. We waited for our pursuers.

As they came out, Max said “Wait.”

  Gingerly they edged forward. “Now”

Max pushed forward, and we fired without pausing. It was a massacre. Max just kept firing. I had the thought that if Kylie was with us then we might have stopped firing. Because she wasn’t, we couldn’t.

Then, we saw Colin at the back.

  “Stop firing.” Max said.

He just stood there. No real expression on his face. So I walked straight up towards him, about three metres away. I held the hand weapon up with my arm fully stretched out. Right at eye level. Still his expression didn’t change.

  “No.” said Alice.

I was stunned. I lowered my weapon. Alice was behind me. She walked slowly past me. Stood right in front of him. There was just the hint of a smile on Colin’s face. As if perhaps there was a chance. Then in one fast movement, Alice raised the weapon and fired. The bullet found its target.

“Torch it. Torch the building.” Max said.

  “Kylie?” I said.

  Max hesitated. Looked at me.

“What would she want us to do?” he asked.

  “Torch it.” I said.

  Chapter 69

We sat. Exhausted. Slumped against the wall. Max gestured for us to move, and follow.

"You have to see this." was all he said.

We staggered towards Swanston Street. Not so much smoke here. Max stood on the corner and pointed south. At this point we could see almost the full length of St Kilda Road.

There it was. A column of military as far as the eye could see. Stretching the full length of St Kilda Rd. Tanks. Armoured Personnel Carriers. Skyhawk helicopters hovering. Massive. An awesome force.

On the lead tank, fluttering loosely in the breeze, there it was. A green flag.
