Phone ringing from the darkness of her bedroom, Beck was already borderline awake. She felt as if she had been all week, ever on alert, even when she was asleep, just waiting for the news to come.

  And she knew she would hear about it. It didn’t matter who caught the case, someone that well-known, and once loved, it would be all hands on deck until they found out what happened, or realized they weren’t going to figure out what happened that quickly, and everyone else returned to their routines, leaving only a few of them to deal with the fallout.

  Grabbing the printout of the old magazine article as she grabbed her gun, Beck folded it into her pocket, glancing at Leo where he lay sleeping on the couch as she followed the call out her apartment door.
