The coach slowed to a more comfortable pace as the coachman pulled on the reins and drew the horses to a walk. At last, a line of handsome poplars marked the boundary of the Duke’s fabulous estate and Tabitha leaned out of the carriage window to catch sight of the lanterns shining atop the magnificent wrought iron gates that were being swung open to admit them. She admired the elegant gatehouse and noted the liveried servants bowing to her as the carriage picked up speed along the gravel driveway that led to the stately house.
This was her moment. She was coming to her new home. She was to be the new Duchess of Rutland, with all the lands and titles and privileges that went along with marriage to Charles Percy. Her share of her father’s inheritance would be added to the Percy fortune and the two families would be united forever. The only minor obstacle now was to find a suitable match for Regina, her beautiful, headstrong little sister. But the wedding would provide a perfect opportunity to invite every eligible bachelor in the nearest seven counties to the celebration. There would surely be enough handsome young nobles to catch Regina’s fancy and the Duke was sure to lend a hand in making sure that the right man was chosen. It was the least he could do to please his pretty young bride. It would be a match made in heaven and Tabitha was determined that her sister would be at the altar within six months of her own wedding to the Duke. It seemed that Regina was not the only member of the Branton family with a stubborn streak!
