  R. did not stay in jail long. Fortunately Catherine was still around; she was considered one of the heroines of the Resistance. As soon as she learned of his predicament she intervened and he was released with apologies. However not everyone in his neighborhood learned the truth, and the false stigma of having collaborated with the milice remained for quite some time.

  As for Catherine’s father, brother, and mother, they had all been deported to the infamous Mathausen-Gusen concentration camp in Austria, where they died just a few weeks before the final Allied victory.
