Read A Night to Remember Page 4

gapping open, small objects crowded their mouths, from what I could tell to be ugly rotten teeth. Cinderella was tossed on to the couch.

"Who are you? What do you want?" They pointed at the bag. When they did that, I could feel it get heavier, more blood poured and began to seep through the material of the bag. I wanted to get Steve out of there, but I wasn't too sure if they would follow me out of the house and down the street. "Who are you?" I shouted at them again. They turned their eyes onto Steve. "You pay attention to me, or I'll bash this bleeding heart all over the room!" Their eyes fell back on me, the feeling from them almost made me fall over. You would need a machete to cut through the atmosphere in this room. I wasn't sure if they wanted Steve or the heart. I held it up and brought the bat back to smash it. They began to walk forward, their hands outstretched, as if trying to summon me to stop. That was all the answer I needed. I took the bat and tossed it at the sliding door with all my might, smashing it. I looked at Steve as I ran passed him, jumping out of the house through the shattered door.

Picking up the bat, I turned to look at them, they began to follow me outside. I jumped off the porch and ran out into the yard. I took a look back and I couldn't see them, only to turn around to try to run out into the yard more but then I couldn't move.

They surrounded me. Their disgusting smell permeated my nose. I knew this smell to be something rotting, decaying. Their mouths opened and shut; that strange language being spoken again. But it sounded as if it was coming around them. Their mouths didn't move as I heard the words being spoken.

"What do you want?!" They went silent. Then I heard them speak. Each voice sounded different, but they said the same thing at the same time.

"We want the heart. We need the heart. It bleeds for us. The blood. The heart."

"What are you doing here? Who are you?"

"We are Everything. We are Everywhere. The heart. The man. We must have the blood. It cries for us."

"Why don't you go away?!" They moved closer to me. I held the bag higher. It was heavier. I could hear their cries of anger as I spilled blood out onto the yard. Things were happening beyond my own comprehension. I finished pouring it all out, mixing dirt with blood, I was standing in the middle of it, my shoes soaking in it. "Answer me!"

"Bound." They said. "Pledge. We want fulfillment." They continued to talk in unison. "Give us!" All of a sudden, they came closer to me. I dropped the bag onto the ground and brought the bat down hard onto the beating heart. The bursting of the heart threw them back away from me, making them fall on the ground like rag dolls. I brought up the bat again and continued the destruction of what they wanted. The ground shook under me. I pounded away several times more. The next thing I knew, I was standing on a pillar of land and there was a ring of emptiness in the ground around me. The creatures around me had fallen into the blackness from which they came, I hoped. The full moon was out, casting its reflective light from the sun on me.

I saw a hand come up and grab the bag and began to pull it in, my foot got tangled up in it. I fell face down on the grass and grabbed hold of it. I looked down and saw another hand reach up and grab my shoe. I quickly slipped my feet out of my bloody shoes. The ground around me rose up, settling into place. Next thing I saw was Sam's truck pulling up and the car Victoria and her mom took to the party. I looked at my watch on my wrist. Midnight. They got out of their vehicles and stood there. The look on their faces said enough to me. I ran past them and back into the house.

"Steve?!" He was still there, smiling. I watched his lips.

  "I felt it!" He said.

"You felt it? You felt the ground shake?" I smiled big and he nodded his head.

"Are you alright?" His family was standing there in front of the broken door.

"Don't worry," I said. "I have everything under control."

"What happened?" Victoria asked. I looked down at Steve.

"Should I tell them?" He smiled, and shook his head no.
