Wilfred the Wizard and the Big Exam
The day of Wilfred’s wizard exam has arrived
but will Wanda spoil it?
The Olde Shoe Shoppe
A shoe shop that never seems to
sell any shoes...
There must be a reason...
Peta and her missing parents
Is it all her uncle’s fault?
And what about her friend Marcie?
Wilfred the Wizard and the Big Exam
Wilfred the wizard was not having a very good day.
He poured milk on his toast, put butter in his tea;
brushed his teeth with shampoo
and brushed his hair with the cat.
Now he couldn’t stop scratching and was sure
he’d given himself fleas.
Today was the day of Wilfred’s Big Wizard Exam.
And yes, Wilfred was just slightly
but growing-by-the-minute, getting larger and larger,
bigger and bigger and more and more
NERVOUS!
How he hated exams!
But not only that…
The Chief Wizard and, yes, the Head Witch
were coming to watch him!
Oh dear, oh dear Wilfred said to himself
as he picked up his teapot and poured tea into the jam jar.
Tea with jam was all right but jam with tea was…yuck!
If Wilfred passed his Big Wizard Exam, not only
would he get a nice shiny badge, but it would mean
he could open his very own magic shop
and sell all sorts of spells and strange looking potions.
And perhaps too, some pretty little bottles of hand lotion;
After all, if a fairy could have soft hands, why not a wizard?
Now although Wilfred was as nervous as a wobbly jelly
and had been for hours, days, even weeks, he was
(fingers and toes crossed) sure he would pass the exam.
So sure, in fact, he had turned the downstairs rooms
of his house into a shop...and Wilfred had called his shop,
Wilfred the Wizard ~ potions spells lotions.
To make his shop stand out, Wilfred had ordered a sign
and it was being put up that very morning: bright red with white writing.
However, not everyone was entirely happy with Wilfred opening a shop…
Across the road was another shop,
Wanda’s Witchy Warehouse.
Wanda, a witch, sold all things witchy and a few wizard things too.
And she didn’t want Wilfred taking all her customers.
“But you sell mostly clothes,” Wilfred had said
when first confronted by Wanda the previous week.
“I’m just going to sell spells and…er…things...” He told her.
“What do you mean, things,” Wanda had asked, staring hard right into
Wilfred’s eyes so that he had to blink and step back. “Oh, erm, potions, lotions…that sort of thing,” he tried to explain.
“Lotions?” Questioned Wanda. “You mean fancy hand creams?”
Wilfred was beginning to feel all hot and bothered.
“Yes. You might call them fancy but they are
quite reasonably priced” – he noticed that Wanda’s hands
were pushed deep into the pockets of her cape.
Perhaps she was in need of a good hand lotion?
“Would you like to try a bottle?” Wilfred asked. Then added, “for free…”
Wanda took away the bottle of fancy hand cream lotion
But told Wilfred if it wasn’t any good, she’d bring it back!
That had been four days ago now, so perhaps Wanda had liked it.
He did hope so because there was a rather nice
blue cloak covered in silver and gold stars in her shop.
Wilfred hoped Wanda might let him have it cheap.
Stepping out of his shop onto the pavement, Wilfred
smiled at the sign man who was up a ladder,
just putting the finishing touches to the shop sign.
He crossed the road to get a better look and at that moment
Wanda stepped out of her shop and immediately started smiling.
This thought Wilfred was a little unusual for Wanda.
He politely smiled back to be friendly then noticed,
Wanda’s smile had changed into a giggle.
Wanda pointed at the sign above Wilfred’s shop,
“Oh that’s good,” she said, “very, very good.”
Wilfred looked up at the sign…it didn’t say;
Wilfred the Wizard ~ potions spells lotions
In big white letters on a red background it read;
Winifred Lotion smells the Wizards potions.
Wilfred groaned, this day was not going well…
Suddenly from out of nowhere, which indeed it was,
there was a puff of smoke and a flash and sparkle of light.
The Chief Wizard appeared, as real as real could be,
right in front of Wilfred’s shop.
“Oh no,” groaned Wilfred, “my big exam,”
and his legs began to quiver like jelly.
The Chief Wizard looked at Wilfred’s shop, smiled
then crossed the road, “nice shop Wilfred,” he said,
“Did Wanda help out with the sign?”
Wilfred looked at the Chief Wizard.
“Do you two know each other?”
Then Wilfred asked Wanda, “did you have my sign changed?”
Wanda gave a little guilty smile, clicked her fingers and whoosh!
In a shower of sparkles she turned into the Head Witch.
Wilfred was so surprised and shocked and surprised
And shocked again that he sat down and moaned, “I’m confused.”
The Chief Wizard and Head Witch looked at Wilfred,
“You should know, Wilfred, wizard tests aren’t always obvious.”
Wanda helped Wilfred to his feet.
“A good wizard is a patient wizard, Wilfred.”
“Now,” said the Chief Wizard, “time for you to change your sign back.”
Wilfred thought hard and imagined the right words in his head.
Then he crossed his fingers and toes, screwed up his eyes
and said; “huddle, puddle, wuddle
Turn my sign back from a muddle!”
A flash of light and a shower of glitter
exploded around Wilfred's shop and in an instant,
the shop sign was back to normal;
Wilfred the Wizard ~ potions spells lotions
And before Wilfred knew what was happening,
The Chief Wizard was shaking his hand,
“Congratulations! You have passed your Big Wizard Exam!
Anyone who can change a sign back that quick deserves
To be a wizard,” said the Chief Wizard.
But that was not all.
The Chief Wizard presented Wilfred
with a shiny wizard badge and a certificate.
And Wanda presented Wilfred with
the rather nice blue cloak covered in silver and gold stars
from her shop window.
And then.
..then Wilfred set about becoming a real wizard.
But that is another tale for another time...
