Read All's Fair in Love and Football Page 4

Her mother takes it all in. “I can’t believe I’m giving my baby away.”

Chelle exhales. “I wish my father could have shared this moment, but it doesn’t even matter because I’m so happy right now.”

  Earl walks in “You ready?”

Chelle hides her face before realizing it’s not her groom. “EARL! You know, this past year has been really tough. I just want thank you for putting everything in the past.” Earl replies, “We are family that's what we are supposed to do.” They hug. He gives her an envelope from jacket. “I brought you something.”

  She reads the card inside:

Michelle I wish things could have been different.

I’m sorry if I ever hurt you in the past.

I’m happy that you're happy right now.

  God Bless You, Mike

She’s taken back. “I wasn’t expecting this but thanks.” The organs start to play. They scramble to get ready. It’s now or never.

  IN BURSTS MICHAEL.

Earl’s shocked. “What are you doing here?! You came in like Batman.” Michael tries to catch his breath. “Earl, Miss Jo, can I have some privacy please?” They look to Chelle. She gives them the ok.

Michael pours his soul to her, “I can’t let you do this. I still love you. If I said I wanted to see you with someone else, I’d be lying. I feel like you know and I know we’re supposed to be together. We make each other laugh, we make each other smile like no one else can do and I want to do that with you for the rest of my life.”

“Mike I’m about to get married. Right now.”

“No, you're not. You don't want to.”

  “I have to.”

Michael pleads. “You don't want that.” She stops to think a moment. “It's been too much stress. It's been over a year. I don't want to live in the past.”

He puts it all on the table. “This isn't the past, this is me, this is you, and this is right now. Michelle Benton I love you. I’m not asking you not to marry that man. I’m asking you to do what's in your heart.”

Chelle pauses. She starts to cry. She doesn’t know what to do. Michael comforts her in his arms. It’s just like old times as they look each other in the eye. They lean in closer and closer.

They close their eyes and embrace one another. Chelle pulls away.

“What are you doing?! What are we doing?!”

He replies. “I don’t know what we’re doing but I know this is right.”
