CHAPTER FORTY-EIGHT

I RETREATED OUT OF the garage and went back upstairs. I’d remembered something that I’d read a few minutes before. I dug out the plastic folder containing Eddie’s current correspondence and burrowed down to the third item. It was a letter written on headed paper from a Mr Charles Samuels, confirming that the property on Meadbank would be let to Edward Hampshire for another year.

I took out my mobile phone and rang Suzi Hampshire. She answered almost immediately.

  ‘Where’s Meadbank?’ I said.

There was a pause. ‘Is that Mr Dyke?’ I told her it was. ‘Why do you want to know where Meadbank is?’

‘Is it the lock-down garage that Eddie rents?’

  ‘Yes.’

  ‘How do I get there?’

‘It’s in Welwyn. Find the rugby ground and it’s just behind. There’s a group of half a dozen in a row next to some waste ground. You won’t be able to get in without a key.’

  ‘I’ve got one,’ I said.
