Meg begins to stir. I am sitting in the overstuffed chair next to the sofa, the two pieces arranged in a typical “L” configuration.

  “Meg?”

Meg’s arm flails to the side missing the coffee table by an inch. She is coming to.

I whisper softly in her ear, “E Pluribus Unum.”

  Meg pulls herself up. “What?”

“You fainted. Are you okay? I think you may have hit your head when you fell.”

Meg reaches up and feels her head. She is still very groggy but is regaining her wits as she shakes her head. “What? I fainted?”

“Yes, you just passed out. I guess the excitement of the day’s events caught up with you.”

Meg stares around the room, trying to regain her bearings. “Wow. I must have hit my head. I don’t remember falling at all.”

“Well, you dropped pretty quick. Too quick for me to catch you.”

“We were talking… About how I got you out of Paramour.”

“Yes, you did a great job.”

  “Why am I so tired?”

I reach out and cup my hand against her face. “I don’t know. You better lay down. I don’t want you fainting again.”

She puts her hand on mine and smiles. “I’m sure I’ll be fine.”
