Read Base Instincts Page 14

He lost track of time and orgasms. Eventually, maybe a month later, if his exhaustion was any indication, he reached full awareness and found himself on top of Slake, their hot, damp skin plastering them together. At some point he’d flipped Slake onto his back, their hands linked, their mouths locked.

Slake was half-gone, his drowsy eyes barely cracked as he looked up at Raze. “I think,” he breathed, “that I’m dead.”

“I know I am,” he groaned. Gods, his entire body felt like rubber, and yet, a new, strange energy infused him. Slake, he thought. The new energy was Slake. Raze could feel him everywhere. Inside. Outside. In his head.

Right now, Slake was happy. Content. As Raze gazed down at the best thing that ever happened to him, Slake smiled. “You’re happy.”

  “We’re bonded.”

As if Slake’s arm weighed half a ton, he hefted it up. “Holy shit,” he breathed. “Look.”

Raze struggled to focus his eyes, and when they finally went 20/20, he grinned. Black lines were beginning to appear on Slake’s hand and spread up his arm, solidifying in a perfect copy of Raze’s dermoire.

“It’s amazing.” Raze stared in awe. “Beautiful.”

Slake reached out and brushed his finger over Raze’s throat. His skin tingled under Slake’s fingertip and spread like erotic hellfire around his neck. “It’s happening,” he murmured. “You’re getting the mate rings. We just made history.”

Raze would have laughed if he’d had the energy. “Eidolon is going to fucking come in his pants when I tell him. He loves anomalies.”

  “I love you.”

Rolling to one side, Raze twined their fingers and brought Slake with him. They were messy and sweaty and needed to shower, but they could do that in a minute. Right now, all Raze wanted was to enjoy the one thing he never thought he could have. To say the one thing he never thought he’d say.

  “I love you too.”

Air Force veteran Larissa Ione traded in a career as a meteorologist to pursue her passion of writing. She has since published dozens of books, hit several bestseller lists, including the New York Times and USA Today, and has been nominated for a RITA award. She now spends her days in pajamas with her computer, strong coffee, and supernatural worlds. She believes in celebrating everything and would never be caught without a bottle of champagne chilling in the fridge . . . just in case. She currently lives in Wisconsin with her US Coast Guard husband, her teenage son, a rescue cat named Vegas, and her very own hellhound, a King Shepherd named Hexe.
