This whole thing could have been avoided, except for the driver of one car. They could be back at the Academy, all smiles and handshakes and pats on the back. Instead one of them suffered a concussion, and another two bullet wounds.
The body retrieval could have gone down beautifully, except for the actions of one seventeen year old girl. One of them could have provided the distraction while the dogs were hit with gas, and two of them would creep into the impound to liberate two nasty problems. Not a mile away, in the shallow woods, the bodies could be dealt with. Instead problems arose.
Now- Two Days Before Graduation
“Dogs are secure,” Jess lied, and crouched onto the top of a van. The dogs watched her, speculating, while she smiled and waved at them. Not far away a bored cop stood checking out a confiscated muscle car.
“I’ve located the car,” Raspazzi’s voice came over her headset. “We’re not parked in. I’m going in.” The dogs perked up their ears and sniffed, then trotted off in Raspazzi’s direction.
“I have control of the surveillance and security systems,” Jiri said, sounding far away even through the earpiece. Crandall stood lookout a ways away while Jiri sat cross-legged next to the security booth.
“Move in,” Crandall said, though it was already happening.
A burst of gunfire exploded over the headset and in real life. Chaos erupted. The bored cop suddenly looked interested, while Raspazzi’s curses sounded like they were everywhere. The cop got out his gun, and dying dogs whined out their last. Jess pounced toward the sounds.
The cop shot once, then twice, and put Raspazzi down before Jess pistol-whipped him. He dropped flat and unmoving, onto his face. Jess grinned. Crandall’s voice came over the com, demanding a status report, but she ignored him.
She searched through Raspazzi’s pockets, listening to his breathing grow more and more shallow. She found the keys in his hand, and jumped into the car. A part of her mind wondered as she started up the car whether Crandall might deserve the same.
She sped through the gate Jiri opened for her and squealed to a halt to let them in.
Now- The Day Before Graduation
Crandall stopped the car in a back alley and pulled out a twisted mass of pitted, half-eaten metal from the car. He tossed it into a dumpster and got back in, muttering and cursing to himself. He glanced over at Jess, now reading a Young and Modern magazine, and shook his head. He looked in the rearview mirror and caught Jiri’s red rimmed eyes, but neither of them said a word.

Note
Thanks for reading. You’re the reason I write.
If you liked this story, just hang on…there are nine more interconnected tales to go with it. One you can find reprinted in From the Desk of Col. Garrett Ross. The others are coming soon, to be wrapped up in a final compilation: Breaking Benjamin. No longer will I be forced to endure miniscule royalty checks in British Pounds that I can’t cash.
If you already have a receipt for Breaking Benjamin, please keep it and send it to
[email protected]. I’ll send you a free copy of From the Desk of Col. Garrett Ross. Be sure to remove any credit card info so I don’t have to resist the urge to steal your identity and bankrupt you. Cheers!
Oh and by the way, I’ve got a Facebook page you can like for news, illustrations, what’s next, and an all around good time.
Last, if you wanted to rate my story from wherever you found it, or write a review, I’d buy you a milkshake (your choice of flavors).
