twisted cold. I unleashed my weapon and spun to look behind me. Nothing.
"Found twelve.” Gill’s forked tongue hissed without regret.
His eyes dipped more than once, so I nudged around the edge of his desk. Lucy’s motionless body lay jammed beneath desk drawers.
“What in the name of Sam Hill?” I stammered.
“Impossible to find thirteen people in this small town.” He glanced away with admiration and angst. “She knew I hated that number.”
I locked eyes onto him as I crouched into the deep darkness beneath his desk to check for signs of life. I’d fallen for this woman after all.
“Did she come back here to make you number thirteen?”
“Not me.” Gill’s chair flew back.
Lucy’s legs twitched to life. Shadows broke streaks of hallway light, and the lamp toppled across the glass desktop. Stunned, I fell into the credenza. Gill towered over me and stomped across my weapon.
She let loose an inhumane wail. Lucy lunged with a jagged bloody knife.
“You’re number thirteen, Walker.”
