Chapter 20
Two Years Later
“Sydney!” A little voice yelled out. I turned around in time to see Kelly before she latched herself onto my legs. I reached down and picked up by baby sister. She was getting so big!
I kissed her head, “Hey baby girl. Hey Jeremy.” I smiled at my brother who smiled back. I put Kelly on my stool and hugged Jeremy. He’d had his name changed officially.
“Kids wait,” My mom called from around the corner. She turned the corner and I smiled at her. She was wobbling along with her hands on her baby belly. I couldn’t believe how much our lives had changed these last few years.
“Hi mom!” I said.
She smiled, “Hey baby girl. Ace said to tell you hello.”
One of my models approached in one of our new dresses we were working on, “Hey Mrs. Sanchez. How’s the baby doing?”
“The baby’s great,” She smiled at Crystal.
I appraised her outfit, “Well first you need to gain some weight again honey. Wearing kid’s sizes isn’t a good thing; it’s a sign of anorexia. Also I think we need to lengthen that skirt. If you’re wearing it with those heals then it’s just too short.”
“Yes ma’am I’ll let them know.” She nodded and skipped off towards the room where my design team was. I got to do the sketches mainly, and had final say on what worked. I was so proud of our company. We’d opened stores everywhere in the US, and I was going to London to open one there in a month or two.
“She’s pretty.” Kelly said smiling.
I nodded, “Yup.” I was tough on the girls, but they really were stunning.
“You’re coming for dinner tonight?” Mom asked.
I nodded, “Wouldn’t miss it. Everyone’s gonna be home.”
“Can you keep an eye on them?” She asked.
I smiled, “Yeah. You go home. We can hang out here.”
“Thank you sweetheart,” She said kissing my head.
After she left I turned to Jeremy. “Wanna help me with the cover of Crazed?” He nodded. I pulled it up on the computer and let him play around with it. The kid had an eye for the colors and stuff. I kept drawing up sketches for the show in France while Kelly colored quietly.
Around six we all piled into my car and drove home. We piled out and I kissed Ace on the cheek. “Hey Uncle Ace.”
“Daddy,” Kelly said reaching up. He took her smiling and kissed Jeremy’s head. I went in to see Michael and Jeanette on the couch. I squealed and ran over before kissing his cheek as well.
“I missed you so much,” I said happily. He and Jeanette had been in Hollywood. He was in production of his second movie so he was busy. We hadn’t seen each other in months. I was happy he had Jeanette. They made a great couple. She’d originally been a fan of his comedy shows, and after seeing her at every show for a month he asked her out. They’d been together since.
“Missed you too sis,” He said kissing my head. I hugged and kissed Jeanette as well. “We’re gonna have to see each other sooner. You should come visit us.”
“Do I hear my baby sister,” I heard Michelle call as she came into the room. She hugged me and smiled.
“How’s work?” I asked.
She shrugged, “Tough as always. There are always more kids.”
I nodded. She was doing an office job at social services while she worked on getting what she needed to be a full time social worker. She’d wanted to help kids like she had been, and like all the others. We were all so proud of her.
“Sorry we’re late,” Lucas called from the door. He and Amy came in and we hugged as well. They’d been dating for two years now. He was a published author, working at a publishing firm, and getting a degree. They’d met in school. She was getting a teaching degree and substituting.
“You’re not that late,” I said smiling. “How’s the book?”
“Going well,” He said smiling. “How’s the company?”
“Fabulous as always,” I said flipping my hair as I said fabulous before we both started laughing.
The two of us got along well, because he was such a sweet guy. I was so happy he and Amy had found each other.
“So now that we’re all here,” She said. “We have some huge news.” They smiled at each other. “We’re getting married!”
“Congratulations,” We all yelled happily. We sat down to eat in disbelief. This was a huge deal for the happy couple. I’d been hoping they’d get engaged eventually, and was ecstatic to find out they were.
After dinner everyone headed home and I carried a sleepy Kelly upstairs. “Read me a story, please!” She begged.
“Once upon a time,” I started. It was a cute story about a girl who was a nobody who met a prince when they were both taken by a dragon. They became friends and eventually saved each other. She was injured and he helped her get healthy again. “Then the two lived happily ever after.”
“Like us,” She said smiling. “Happily ever after.”
