her arms like a bird in flight. All the while singing out, “fly, robin fly…fly, robin, fly…fly…”
Six months later
Viola and Eric Mathews were in the process of wrapping up their meeting with Langley State Hospital’s chief psychiatrist, Dr. Alan Watts. Though they had been divorced for 12 years, they found strength in each other after the tragedy of their only child’s breakdown due to the ingestation of the powerful psychedelic alkaloid, mescaline.
“Do you have any more questions before we go in and see her?” Dr. Watts inquired.
Through flowing tears, Viola asked, “when do you think my baby will get better and be able to lead a normal life again?”
Dr. Watts waited a few seconds before answering; choosing his words carefully, “At this point, I can’t say. Mescaline is an extreme mind altering drug in the same vein as LSD and PCP. Being that Carmela had never experienced it before, she was not prepared for its effect and consequences. As I’ve told you earlier, your daughter has not responded well to our different stages of treatments and is basically at the same level as when she was first brought here in August.”
Eric Matthews nodded his head gravely. It’s tough to see her in this condition.”
“It’s almost as though she’s withdrawn from everything she knew,” Viola whispered. “Us, her family, her career…everything. She had such big dreams of becoming a pediatrician. Now all that’s on hold because of one careless mistake. It just isn’t fair that this terrible thing happened to her.”
Eric stood. “Thank you doctor for all you’ve done. She’s in God’s hands now.”
Viola broke down and wept. Eric put his arm around her and drew her close. Then he turned to the doctor and said, “we’re ready to see our daughter now.”
