Read Christmas Memories Page 6

Sage ran her hands through her hair, then stared at her reflection in the mirror. There were dark circles under her eyes from not sleeping. This was what she'd been afraid of. How had they found her? She'd called and spoken to Agent Gentry. They wanted to move her somewhere safe, especially since she'd started remembering things. Problem was Wyatt didn't want her to leave and she didn't want to go. So where did that leave them? Waiting for someone to come and shoot them? But if they only wanted her dead, why had they torn the house apart and not stolen anything. Unless it had been a warning. Damn it, none of this made any sense.

Toby's barking yanked her from her thoughts. Shaking her head, she walked out of the bathroom. As she stepped into the living room, looking for her new sidekick, someone grabbed her from behind.

  “Look, Paulie, a ghost.”

Another man laughed. “She looks pretty solid for a ghost.”

The guy holding her turned his attention on Sage. “You couldn't make it easy for us could you?” He tightened his grip. “All you had to do was croak in the car accident. But it's all right, Sal, Soulri will take care of everything once we get rid of you.” As he talked, he dragged her over to the couch.

Sage stared up at him. “Listen, I don't know who you are, but…”

The guy sat on the coffee table in front of her, glowering. “You should've taken that approach in the court room. Because you sure remembered me back then, pointed the finger right at me.”

Sage swallowed trying not to cry. “I'm sorry.” Oh God, was she ever sorry. Sorry she'd ever gotten messed up in this whole thing. Sorry that she'd brought these gorillas to Wyatt's house. Most of all, she was sorry she wouldn't be able to spend the rest of her life with Wyatt.

He waved it away, and smiled. “No big, the boss took care of it.”

Sage closed her eyes then opened them quickly. She might end up in cement shoes in a lake somewhere, but at least she could try and get some answers. “I know you're going to…” she swallowed. “But could you give me one last request?”

Paulie shifted, glancing toward the doors. “Come on, Benny, let's get this over with.”

Benny ignored him. “Go on, Sal, what's your request? It's the least I can do.”

“Tell me what happen that night. I can't remember. The car accident gave me amnesia.”

  “Really?”

Sage nodded, and from behind her came Wyatt's voice. “Really. Now get away from the lady.”

Benny looked past Sage, and she turned as well. Wyatt stood in the kitchen, a twelve gauge pointed at them.

Benny chuckled. “Okay cowboy, but remember it's two against one.”

Wyatt shook his head. “Actually, it's three against two and you're trespassing.”

From out of the office came Anthony and Diego, toting shot guns. “Sage, honey, would you step over here and stand by me.” Quickly getting to her feet, Sage scurried, over to stand behind him. “You okay?”

Sage nodded, and he turned back to the men. “Anthony, did you call the Sheriff?”

Anthony nodded, keeping his gun trained on Paulie. “He's on his way.”

“You see, boys, after what you've done, I'd like to shoot you right here.

Actually the law says I can since you're trespassing but well, I'll let the Feds take care of you.” Not taking his eyes off the two mob boys, he asked, “Sage, you sure you're all right?”

  “Yeah.”

“Good, then go into the kitchen. Call Agent Gentry and tell them we got their boys.”

“Ok.” She reluctantly, headed into the kitchen and he heard her talking.

Benny glanced at Paulie. “You know we'll get off. Our boss has friends in high places.”

Wyatt gave them a grim smile. “Here in Montana?”

Judging from their fallen faces, their boss wasn't quite the big shot they passed him off as.

Sheriff Hannigan hitched up his pants and slapped Wyatt on the back. “Well, we got our very own Broncho Billy.”

Agent Gentry laughed as he and Agent Kimbal came over. “Now there's a name I haven't heard in a long time.”

From Wyatt's side, Sage piped up. “I don't mean to be a party pooper but what's going to happen now?”

“Benny and Paulie will be charged with the attempted murder of Sally Laurel and murder Tony Marcello. You will begin a new life as Sage Lewin.” Agent Kimbal's eyes darted between her and Wyatt. “Or will it be Sage Phoenix rather soon?”

Sage felt her face heat up and Wyatt gave her a squeeze. “One thing at a time.”

  Epilogue

Wyatt and Sage cuddled on the couch. He pressed a kiss to her temple. It had been several weeks since Soulri's boys had broken in. In the kitchen, the phone rang. With a groan, Sage rolled off the couch and walked out, with her perpetual shadow Toby following on her heels. Wyatt heard murmured talking and then after a few moments, she came back out.

“That was Agent Gentry. He just told me that Soulri was arrested on drug charges.” Sage shrugged. “He tried to sell a large amount of Cocaine to an undercover agent, and they busted him. That's all Agent Gentry said I needed to know.”

“Guess that means he's got bigger problems then us, huh?” Reaching up, he grabbed her, and pulled her over the back of the couch. She landed on top of him with a giggle and a nod, then kissed him.

Wyatt grinned. “So, we can get back to you saying thank you to me.”

“Mmm, I like that idea,” Sage kissed him again.
