place. Nancy cannot afford to look at me without shedding tears. Leon, well he turned out to be a living image of his father and Jonah the accountant and football coach turned out to be as hot-headed and funny as his mother. It’s David I am worried about. He broods like Michael, holds a grudge like Shelley and talks more like Leon- but there’s nothing to show for his ghosts. He seems to live a life that reminds me of the trees. They take in everything without complaint and give out everything without restraint. I sit here wondering what will become of me because I heard them talk last night. Leon in his calm voice requested David to keep me and always be good to me like their dad was. Jonah was the one who had a problem with this. Michael had always said that Leon would inherit me, and he did not want his brother going against that. Leon let him talk then said that David would be gentle and kind with me, and that was why he was handing me over to him. David asked, “What about Shelley?”

The whole room went still, and my splinters woke up ready to receive any news about the trouble maker, but Leon answered as calmly as Michael always did, “She will come to know the truth with time, but until then, let’s give Dad a proper burial because he deserves to have some peace. And Jonah, though it seems as though I am going against Dad’s wishes by giving David his favorite chair, please understand that he needs it more than we do. We have our lives Jonah, and remember dad told us to always protect each other, this is my way of doing that- and David keep this chair safe. Do not do anything to spoil or destroy it because that would be going against Dad’s wishes.”

“And what about Mom? When will we tell her?”

“Not now, she’s lost her husband remember. Let her settle down and when the time is right we will tell her, just like Dad requested.” Leon sat on me for the last time yester night and wept, just like Michael had done back when Leon was twelve. I would love to know what it is about Shelley that they kept a secret, and though it seems like my time here is done, one thing is certain, my life with David begins in two days. I know Leon will be fine because he saw the frailty in David, and though they all need me- it’s David who needs me the most because he was Michael’s favorite son.
