  Chapter 54

  Carmen

I bite into the cookie, enjoying the chocolaty goodness that coats my tongue. Amber and Chelsea have been bonding by baking tons of tasty sweets. The last week has been a blur. The trial is fast approaching, and I’m still unsure of what to do. I should stay here, in the cozy house surrounded by my mother’s paintings and my father’s books. But then, I’m reminded that my parents aren’t here. They aren’t filling the room with their voices and laughter. That’s not okay with me. Thinking of the fact that they will fight Uncle Eric alone doesn’t sit well with me. But leaving Jake behind isn’t much of an option. I haven’t seen much of him since he’s returned. Apparently, he quit his job, inspired by what I had told him. So he’s been soul searching, alone. I nearly jump as strong arms wrap around my waist.

“Hey darling,” Jake says into my hair.

“Hey,” I respond, deciding not to reach for another cookie.

“Will you do me a favor?” Jake softly asks.

“What is this favor?” I ask, suspiciously. He laughs then kisses the top of my head.

“I need you to do one small thing for me. Don’t worry, it won’t be too hard.” His tone implies the opposite.

  “What is it?” I ask.

“I want you to make things right with Daniela,” he tells me and I feel uneasy inside. Despite it all, I don’t think that I can let it go.
