Chapter X: “Jacob”
Carol could hear the clock ticking, and she could hear Oliver breathe. It had to be late; it was too quiet. She opened her eyes and looked at the clock. It was three in the morning. She looked at Oliver, which inadvertently opened his eyes to look at her. At times Oliver still scared her in the fact of how large he was, but Oliver was as gentle as a kitten. She did know that Oliver was probably the strongest animal in existence at the present time, other than the two brothers and the mysterious “Prototype X.”
Carol turned her head toward the door. It was open, which meant that someone had to have come in while she slept. She wondered if it was still the same week, since she felt so exhausted.
Oliver perked up and sat up off of Carol. He began the low toned growl, like before.
Carol couldn’t see who was there, but whoever it was, Oliver didn’t like it.
“Carol?” Spoke the person. It was Alison.
“Alison, why are you here?” Carol dryly asked. She patted Oliver causing him to hush.
“I just came to check on you.” Alison said. She walked, or dragged herself over to the chair next to the bed. “How are you feeling?” Her voice had changed a bit from yesterday, but Carol could still recognize it.
Carol turned to look at her, but couldn’t see her clearly.
“Why are you trying to look at me?” Alison asked.
“I want to see my friend.” Carol said.
Alison laughed. “You’ll have to look at pictures for that, now, Carol.”
“No, I won’t.” Carol protested. “You’re still my friend.”
“We’ll go to graduation together wearing a necklace of each of our colors.” Carol said. “Then we’ll both get married, and have a wedding according to our colors. We’ll both be so beautiful, Alison, I promise.”
“Yeah.” Alison sounded like she was crying. “When this is over, you’ll be beautiful, Carol, but I…I’ll be just a shadow.” Her voice was broken when she stopped.
Carol didn’t know what to say to make Alison feel better. She couldn’t tell her anything, because she couldn’t relate to becoming a genetic creation. Then she thought about the fact that Jade knows the research. “Maybe Jade can help you when this is over. He created Oliver, I’m sure he can find a way to help you.”
Alison laughed.
The two of them fell silent, neither knowing what to say.
Then there was a tapping noise at the window.
Oliver began his low growl this time turned toward the window.
Carol slowly pulled herself into an upright position. “Get Jade and the others up, Alison.” Carol whispered.
Alison stood and ran out of the room silently.
Oliver began to growl louder as the tapping grew louder. Carol tried to hide herself behind him, but it wasn’t going to do any good. It wasn’t long until the window was broken inwards and in jumped the ghastly figure of Jacob.
“Good morning.” Jacob said in his harsh voice.
Oliver stood between of Carol and Jacob.
Jacob knocked Oliver off of the bed, causing Oliver to hit the chair. Jacob grabbed Carol by her arm and pulled her up. “Sorry, little lady, but I find that this is the only way to lure my little brother to the main attraction.” He pulled her closer with the arm without claws and jumped out of the window.
Carol stared up at the face of Jacob, as he ran down the street. She knew where he was going—the laboratory. Carol felt herself losing consciousness, and couldn’t stop herself from passing out.
Oliver howled in the room, as he sat next to the bed.
Jade and the others ran into the room, turning on the light as they entered.
“Damn it.” Jade cursed.
“I was too slow.” Alison said.
Jade shook his head. “None of this is your fault.”
Tommy, Mike, and Amber walked to the window. “Where are they going?” Tommy asked.
“To the lab.” Jade said as he clenched his fist.
Oliver stopped howling and jumped on the bed. He picked up an envelope and jumped over to Jade.
Jade took the envelope from Oliver and looked at it. “He left it.” Jade opened the envelope and took out the paper.
“What does it say?” Alison asked taking a step closer to Jade.
“It says, ‘All will shine, when the moon covers the sun.’” Jade read.
Mike put his hands together. “The eclipse is tomorrow.”
“What an odd time to try to destroy the world.” Amber said. “If you fail, you’d have to wait until the next one.”
Tommy pushed Amber. “This is not a time for dumb jokes!”
“All right.” Amber said sarcastically.
“What time is the eclipse?” Jade asked.
“I think it’s supposed to be at nine in the morning.” Mike said.
“Then we only have until nine in the morning to get to Jason’s old house.” Jade said.
“That’s six hours away.” Amber said.
Tommy glared at Amber. “Thanks for stating the obvious.”
“You're welcome.” Amber said sarcastically.
“You don’t plan to go against him bare handed do you?” Alison asked.
Jade turned to the door. “Of course not, that’s why we have to hurry.”
Jade walked out of the room and headed to the door. The others followed him.
“Where are we going?” Amber asked.
Jade said.
The group followed Jade down the street to an old abandoned warehouse. They had to stop in front of a large gate.
“How are we supposed to get over that?” Tommy asked.
“You don’t.” Jade turned to look at everyone. “Stay here, I’ll be right back.”
Jade jumped up to the top of the ten-foot fence and stood on the rail. The group below him seemed surprised, and turned to Oliver.
Oliver squeaked and sat down.
Jade jumped down to the other side of the fence and walked into the building.
Everyone else sat up against the fence waiting for Jade. They carried on a conversation about what they were going to go do—fight an “ultimate creation” of Jade’s psychopathic brother. They were unsure of what was going to happen when they reached Jason’s old house, and that made them afraid. Despite everything they had been through, they couldn’t comprehend what they were going to face and what could happen to them.
After a long time, Jade came out of the building and jumped back over the fence.
“I’m ready.” Jade said.
Tommy stood up and crossed his arms. “What took so long?”
Jade pulled out a handgun and pointed it at Tommy. “Target practice.”
Tommy stepped back.
Jade smirked and brought the gun down as he turned towards the road. “Let’s go.”
Everyone decided it was time to go, and walked the path to their next battle. When they arrived it was already eight-thirty.
“Nice of you to join me, brother.” Jacob stood on the curb.
“Where is Carol?” Jade asked.
Jacob walked toward the now cleared spot where Jason’s house once stood. “With Prototype X.” He turned quickly to face the group. “They’ll be joining us soon.”
Jade raised his handgun.
“Now, now, if you shoot me now, you’ll never see Carol again, dear brother.” Jacob said.
“How can we trust you?” Tommy asked.
“Do you wish for them to join us, now?” Jacob asked. “I can arrange that.”
“Show us Carol, or I’ll blow you to hell.” Jade commanded.
Oliver walked in front of Jade and began to growl.
“Dear brother, I’m giving you what you want.” Jacob said.
“I want nothing of your crazy ideas!” Jade yelled.
Jacob crossed his arms. “You want our parents back, do you not?”
“They are dead, Jacob.” Jade said. “They died; there is no way for the
m to come back.”
“You are wrong.” Jacob said. He raised his right arm holding a remote and hit a button. “Behold Prototype X—our parents!”
Below the area where Jason’s house stood, two metal doors separated and a platform began to rise. When the platform stopped, it showed a creature of arms and legs sewed together around two bodies.
“That is sick!” Amber yelled.
The group looked at the hideous creation. They noticed Carol to the left side behind the thing.
“Putting one living being in this creation will bring it to life.” Jacob said.
“Great, we’re dealing with a modern day Frankenstein!” Tommy yelled.
“That still isn’t going to bring them to life!” Jade commented.
Jacob laughed. “Oh, but that is the beauty of it—it will. After they awake,” He raised both his arms, “we’ll destroy the world together. If the world chooses to rob happiness from innocent people driving them into death, then those people shall rid the world of happiness.”
“What does this have to do with Carol?” Alison asked.
“Ah, Prototype 08, how nice of your inquiry.” Jacob said. He pulled his arms to his sides. “Have none of you figured it out, yet?”
“What the hell are you talking about?” Jade asked.
“I’ll give you one big hint, brother.” Jacob said. “Dr. Arnold Davis.”
Jade seemed confused. “I still don’t why it has anything to do with Carol.”
“Dr. Arnold Davis was Carol’s grandfather.” Alison said.
“Yes, and he is the one who administered the treatment to our parents, dear brother.” Jacob said.
“So you have been attacking Carol’s happiness for something she knew nothing of?” Jade asked.
Jacob crossed his arms. “This is my revenge on the world.” He walked over to the creation. “Shall we end this?”
The eclipse began.
“What exactly do you plan to do?” Jade asked.
“Blow up the moon, of course.” Jacob said. “If I destroy it during the eclipse it is bound do cause major destruction all over the solar system.” He said keenly. “In the form of Prototype X, I am bound to the ability to power the cannon strong enough to destroy such a thing at that distance.”
“You’re stupid for thinking that such a thing will work!” Tommy yelled.
“That’s the problem, Tommy, he’s not stupid.” Jade said.
Jacob laughed. “Yes, dear brother, the time is now.”
Jacob turned and walked toward the creature. He pulled a slit in the front open and climbed inside the hideous creation.
The longest arms began to move, as it slowly stood up.
“Oh, hell.” Mike said as he stared onto the creature.
“Same here.” Tommy said.
“Now, dear brother, watch as I destroy the last relative to Arnold Davis!” Jacob said.
“Stop.” Jade said. He raised the gun. “I don’t want to shoot, Jacob.”
Jacob laughed. The voice was beginning to become a deeper tone. “What is the matter with you?”
“Our parents died years ago.” Jade said. “Let them rest in peace.”
“They are with me now, brother.” Jacob said.
Jade shook his head. “No.”
Carol was waking up, and she could see what was going on. She saw it—the creation that was known as “Prototype X.” She rose up in horror of the horrific creation.
“What the hell?” Carol asked.
The thing turned to, what Carol could tell, was towards her. It reached out an arm as if to grab her.
Jade fired a shot, causing Prototype X to turn back to face the group.
It laughed. “Foolish gunfire. This form is invincible.”
“Nothing is invincible, Jacob.” Jade said.
Prototype X slung one of its arms around, throwing something in the process.
About ten spikes flew towards Jade at incredible speed. He dodged some, but a three hit him. Jade knelt down to the ground and pulled out one out of his leg, and threw it down.
“You don’t care.” Jade said harshly. “You never cared. Many people die, Jacob; that is life’s ultimate fate. Nothing will change that!” Jade looked up quickly. “You are not God! You can’t decide who lives and dies; it is not your place! People die for the wrong reasons every day, and you are adding to it.” Jade raised the gun. “I’m not going to let you take Carol away from the ones who care about her. Maybe that’s the irony, Jacob.” Jade smiled. “And if you haven’t figured it out yet, ‘dear brother,’ I love Carol.”
Prototype X laughed. “Foolish, then I shall have to kill you, too before I destroy happiness.”
Jade raised the gun to a black spot in the middle of the two heads of his former parents. “Good-bye, Jacob, let your soul rest in hell.” He fired the gun.
Prototype X yelled in pain, and then began to fall over.
Everyone stood in awe away from Jade and Oliver.
Carol stood up and began to slowly walk toward Jade and Oliver. When she reached Jade, she hugged him. “Thank you, and…I love you, too.”
The eclipse ended as the moon moved away from the sun allowing the morning to grow bright.
The sounds of sirens were heard coming from both directions of the street. Everyone gathered around Jade and Carol and awaited the police to arrive. They didn’t know what to say when they arrived, but really, they only cared about living.
The End…??
