She could hear her mother’s voice whispering sentiments of bravery and love. It made her wonder if they were connected telepathically. Realizing that was possible made her feel connected. A light breeze swept over her face, and with it, the smell of a favorite southwestern dish lingered in the air. The name of it escaped her, but the aroma was unmistakable. She closed her eyes and breathed it in, realizing there was no explanation for the scent, but she allowed it to tease her senses and fill her heart with comfort.
Seneca’s gaze turned to Jake, Conner, and Shayna. They were frolicking with the arions and teasing Keene Ardara while he lectured on the dos and don’ts of using the chocolate ambrosia. Wren and Rileau remained solemn as they looked on. As she focused on each of their movements, they seemed to slow down, as if giving her time to see the smallest of details in their smiles, eyes, and gestures. She was able to observe all the various idiosyncrasies that set them apart. Each movement, tone of voice, and laugh would be forever etched in her memory. Her body temperature dropped. She was frigid to her core, but she didn’t move or attempt to warm herself. Grief washed over her. A tear trickled slowly down her icy cheek; she allowed it to remain as acceptance of the loss she felt. She shook her head and motioned to wipe away any signs of crying. She was startled to find the tear had frozen into a delicate ice crystal. She looked at it curiously before flicking it away. Seneca took a deep breath and stretched her wings. She admired their beauty as she strolled slowly toward the others. They were ready to take flight.
