Read Cult Page 4

began to pull off the cover and at first she couldn't work out what it was, this thing that was underneath. Realisation came to her second after second, her mind built the picture and showed her what it was.

Gruesome statues, twisted figures in unnatural poses. Horror was stricken across their faces. These were people. Statues that looked so real, so life like apart from the unnatural colouring of the skin, a thick, heavy white that must have been painted on, more like plaster as some of it was uneven in places. The stains on the sheet came from these statues, they bled from various parts, one from the chest, another from the head. It was so real, so like the colour of blood and the eyes, the eyes of a woman stared back at her. They were dead and empty and yet there was something so human about them. But surely they were just statues?

She stood unable to breathe through the shock. What if they weren’t statues, what if there had been others before her and this was what happened to them? The smell, so clinical but the stench of death now flooded her senses. They were people, weren’t they?

Disgust built up in her stomach. Hatred, fear and panic set in, was this what they wanted her for? And then she remembered that Kai had hold of her hand still. Slowly she turned her head towards the pair and it was Niall’s face she met first. He was smirking, grinning at her revulsion to what stood mere meters away.

And she pulled away from Kai, from the horror of the possibility that these people had done something so sickening. She wanted to scream so loud but her voice was gone, she could think of no words to describe the terror, the repulsion she felt at them for taking her, for hurting her.

For a moment the three of them stood in silence. She was shaking again, breathing heavily, her heart beating frantically and then her instincts kicked in, she had to get away from them. She turned and ran, she ran frantically away from them. She heard Kai say her name but she would not stop for anything. Then she heard the creak of shoes on the marble floor behind her, they were following.

She sped up, ran as fast as she could, her adrenaline keeping her going. Where she was headed, she wasn't sure but she made her way back through the corridor Kai had taken her down back towards the heavy door she had stepped out of some minutes ago.

Her robe fell to the marble floor as she reached the door. Copying what Kai had done earlier she forcefully pulled the lever and crept through a narrow gap in the doorway. She fell back against the cold metal as the door closed again just to get her breath, she was panting heavily.

But she didn't want to stop here, they could open this door easily and so she pushed herself forward. Scrambling down the corridor she tried the doors of every room hoping to find one unlocked, but not the robe room or the doctors room as far as she knew the Doctor was just the same as the others.

On her left she barged herself against one door, her hands fumbled with the door knob to open it and she almost fell to the floor as the door flung open. She quickly slammed the door shut and turned the lock. As it clicked she backed away from it and stood, her whole body trembling violently, tears falling thickly down her cheeks. There was nothing but boxes in this room, no window and no phone, nothing she could use to help herself.

She began to let out long groans, wishing in her head to go home, to be out of this nightmare. Why had she stayed at the site after dark? Why didn't she listen to her guide? Why hadn’t she just come back to the site in the morning? So many regrets went through her mind. What would happen if she died here, would her family ever know what happened?

And then, she heard the footsteps in the corridor outside. She froze once again forcing herself to be silent so they wouldn't be able to hear her. She was petrified, who was it? Was it Kia or Niall? And what would they do to her for running away?

She heard the turning of the door knob and then the banging on the door, that made her let out a short sharp scream in fright.

Her body could take the strain no longer, with her hands clinging to her head she felt sick, so sick as if she might pass out and the sobs came so strongly now.

The door handle turned again. Someone was coming for her.
