  Barbara was torn as she reached the open driver side door. She knew that she should take great care with whoever was slumped against the horn in case the person was terribly injured. On the other hand, she knew that she needed to put more emphasis on what Vincent had commanded her to do, in spite of who may or may not be hurt…or worse. She said a silent prayer for the victim while she worked, quickly shoving her left hand through the open window and pushing the person back in the seat. The horn immediately ceased.

  “Who is it?” Vincent snarled from above.

  Even in the dim light Barbara could immediately recognize her best friend’s husband. She and Michael had known the two of them for years. They had a fantastic past together and had always dreamed of sharing their futures together as well.

  This was the end of that dream.

  She reached for his neck to check his pulse, but there was dried blood all over his clothes and in his beard. It appeared that he had been dead for quite some time. How he had managed to pilot a car in such a condition, she did not know.

  “It’s Mark Jackson,” she said through the growing lump in her throat. “Vanessa’s husband. He’s dead.”

  “How convenient!” came his reply, and then she heard the loud crash of something heavy land atop the roof of the house above her. Barbara stepped back and looked up but Vincent was gone.
