  At 8:30 that evening, another night Mr. Miller had to work late and one that Mrs. Miller spent in the sewing room making Lucy-Lou a new Easter dress, Buster finally did get hungry. He inched his way out, eyes searching the ground for Lucy-Lou’s feet or her peering faces. When he didn’t see her, he popped out from beneath the couch. 

  Lucy-Lou hoped he would and had waited ever so patiently. After Buster took a few nibbles of his food, when he’d forgotten all about Lucy-Lou and buried his face deep into his bowl, Lucy-Lou popped out from above the couch herself. She snatched Buster in her arms and quieted his bark by clenching her hands around his muzzle.

  “Hold still, you dumb dog.”
