Chapter 7: Love’s in the air

John used to drive me to the Doctor’s every morning and also kept a track of my medication. I used to intentionally make us stop at the store, giving myself a chance to get a lucky glimpse of that girl but I never saw her until this one day I was at the doctor’s getting my blood pressure checked and she walked in again on me, this time dressed up as a nurse. My blood pressure rose up and the doctor got worried he quickly asked her to get water and she rushed out. My eyes got dreamy and I looked at the doctor who was looking worried to me but I was sweetly poisoned by love. Then an angel brought me my life saving liquid. I spill it all over the place and just kept looking at her, I think I passed out in her laps.

My eyes opened up in my bed again. I turned to left side; there was the doctor, Mr. and Mrs. Keeper and John. They all were smiling at me. I still didn’t know what it was about? I turned right and there she was. I kept on looking at her and she smiled back until a voice broke the silence, it was the doctor.

“See Mr. Keeper the medicine which the best doctor’s could not find was right here.”

I turned to him and now understood why everybody was laughing.

“Son, meet your new nurse for a month, Ms. Angela” I turned right again and looked at my angel.

“Everybody left the room giggling, Mrs. Keeper came to me and kept her hand on my forehead before leaving and it was just the two of us now”

Then she spoke for the first time as if my ears tasted honey, “Hello Mark, my name is Angela”. I looked into her eyes, she liked me I guess but it was too soon to ask.

After making me drink a medicine, she tucked me into bed and then sat beside my bed on the chair. Her hands were like rose petals and never an object so soft and tender had touched me ever. I kept my hands on the same spot on my cheeks where she touched me, I was under her spell. I just kept staring at her and I think she didn’t mind. I felt sleepy; my medication contained a drug which made me sleep. That night I didn’t dream any death.

I woke up next morning and thought it to be a dream; my angel was sitting next to me preparing for my breakfast.

I asked her, “Is this a dream?”

She laughed, “No, Mark you are very much awake now, what were you dreaming of?”

I replied, “I dreamt of, never mind. Where is everyone else?”

“Well Mr. & Mrs. Keeper are downstairs and John just left us with this amazing breakfast which they tell me is your favorite, Two eggs with sunny side up, butter toast, grilled tomatoes and a mug of hot cocoa. We have the same choice of breakfast” she smiled.

I looked at her and smiled back.

I started to enjoy this, the best part was she made my dreams go away and she always got amazed at the orphanage stories I would tell her. In a couple of weeks I was perfectly fine and all the four of us went on a fishing trip down the southern part of the town. I had a lot of fun, we caught fish and then we cooked it on the beach. It was perfect Mr. Keeper was a lover by nature and he left no opportunity conveying the same to her beloved. Each time he would say something romantic, Angela and I would look at each other and smile, both of us volunteered to cook the catch but the old couple knew what was cooking for lunch it wasn’t fish but was love. Time passed by and we would see each other more often now. After a month Angela left our place and went back to town. We would often meet at the local bar and have a real good time.

She had a bike and she would make me sit behind her and drive to distant places along the sea and in the jungle. We both were bonded by love.

Then one day I shared a lot of my life’s mystery with her including my dreadful dreams and my experience with death, to my surprise she took it very well. She was a good listener and too revealed that she was also an orphan and didn’t know who her parents were? All she knew was that her parents had left her at church and she was picked up by his step father who then took care of her as his own child. She went to this local school in town and she would see my old orphan through the window of her school bus, this made me realize that she was the girl whom I used to see from the stairs of the church. This was like a dream come true. She grew up to work as a nurse at the hospital, but also worked with private doctors to earn some extra money and support her studies.

I was so thrilled to know all this, I took her face in my hands and said, “Angela you are the most beautiful person, I used to admire you every time your bus passed my orphanage and wonder what you would look like as never got a chance to see your face. Now that I know that you were so close I feel all my miseries and pains were worthwhile.”

We both dived into each other’s eyes, she blushed and then we kissed. I made a promise to myself; I will never let anything happen to her. That night I dreamt a death after a long night and I knew this time that these weren’t dreams, they were for real.

A month later I found myself running to the hospital as I entered the ward almost in tears, about to break down. I saw my angel sent from above, fighting for her last breaths. The life support system kept on making a beep after every few seconds. I had promised myself that I would not let Death take her away from me but I even with all this power couldn’t stop the inevitable.

She said, “Tell me my favorite story from the beginning.”

I looked into her eyes with my heart filled with pain. I held her hands and said, “I am not letting you go.”
