Read Dinner Party Page 7

Dear Mr. Parker,

I am flattered that you wish me to return for another dinner party, but it’s not necessary. It didn’t even cross my mind that I hadn’t shared much about myself at the party. Eurydice and I are kind of a package deal; it would have been much the same if I had told my own story. Eurydice doesn’t regret a thing about the evening either, she said it was delightful.

I know the next guests are sent for a reason, and they will continue our story, not Eurydice’s and mine, but humanity’s story. You could say we are all pieces of a great puzzle. Where each piece fits in the picture, is not as important as making sure all of the pieces are there.

There is no competition between us, if a piece has to be jammed into a place, it probably doesn’t belong there. The thing about love is it is not competitive; someone doesn’t have to lose for someone else to succeed. In love your good is mine, and mine is yours. Helping you find your place is as valuable to the whole picture, as me finding my own. Every good is reason to rejoice.

I think what I would contribute to what has already been said at the party, my favorite phrase: No matter the circumstance. Truth never changes, and never by circumstance. I hope I helped in some way. Also I am not rejecting your invitation to your dinner party; I am trading it for an invitation to a dinner party here at a later date.

  Sincerely,

  Orpheus
