CHAPTER SIX

The next morning Jocelyn woke up determined to have a day of pampering. She didn’t have to work and needed to get the nightmare of the prior evening out of her head. She berated herself; if she hadn’t been daydreaming about a man, she might not have had her purse snatched.

Since she had started working for Reese, she neglected her regular hair and nail appointments. Before she became a cleaning lady she had regularly visited the gym. Now she didn’t need to. She was keeping fit because cleaning the offices was hard, sweaty, dirty work.

After getting out of bed, she checked the stock market reports while she drank her coffee. Her stocks were doing exceptionally well. She checked her accounts to see if any dividend checks had been deposited recently. Then she placed an order for a stock that she had been watching.

She decided to treat herself to a visit to the museum before she went to the hairdresser. She wanted to see the new exhibit they were displaying of early colonial life. She was fascinated with the exhibits; especially the one showing how early colonists cooked their meals in open fireplaces.

As she was viewing the exhibit, she thought to herself, thank God for the invention of microwaves. The exhibit made her think about lunch so she looked around for the restaurant that was housed inside the museum. It was a little crowded due to the lunch crowd. While she was looking for an empty table, she spotted Lilly and Roger sitting together, deep in conversation.

She certainly hadn’t expected them to be in a museum during a work day. She decided to try to find a table without them seeing her.

She knew she was out of luck when she heard Lilly say loudly, “And who do we have here? Look, Roger, it’s the maid; a maid who’s interested in art. Can you believe it? Shouldn’t she be someplace cleaning floors?”

People were starting to turn around to look at them out of curiosity, because Lilly was talking so loud. Jocelyn knew if she ignored Lilly, she would only get louder and draw more attention to them.

Jocelyn felt like taking off her shoe and throwing it straight at Lilly’s head. Instead of letting Lilly goad her into doing something violent, she walked to their table and said pleasantly, “I didn’t expect to see you two here today. Taking in a little bit of art on your lunch break?”

Roger grabbed Lilly’s hand and practically yanked her arm from its socket as he hurriedly pulled her up from their table. He said, “We’re just finishing lunch. You can have our table. We have to head back to the plant now anyway. See you later Jocelyn.”

Jocelyn couldn’t figure out what that little scene had been all about. She hadn’t realized that Lilly and Roger were seeing each other outside the office. She couldn’t figure out what he saw in “Evileen.” Jocelyn wondered if they were sleeping together.
