She claps her hands. “Gah, I’m so excited.”

Skye made the choice to move into Denver with Taj and I for a while before she figures out where she wants to travel to. It took her a while to come up with a plan, but she’s decided she definitely wants to see the world.

“I’m getting another drink.” Danny grunts, standing and walking off.

“Is he still upset you’re leaving?” I ask her.

She watches him go, her face sad. “He won’t admit it if he is. Stubborn as his father.”

  I laugh.

“Someone else inherited that awful gene,” Diesel says, and I punch him in the shoulder.

  “You love my stubborn side.”

He grins down at me. “I do when we’re—”

“Ew, D!” Matilda cries. “Don’t do it.”

  We both laugh.

“I’m takin’ my girl home now,” Diesel says. “You guys have fun.”

  “We’re going home?” I ask.

He grins down at me. “Oh yeah.”

I flush and stand. “I’m going to love you all and leave you.”

“Ohhh, getting their jiggy on.” Skye wiggles her brows.

I blow her a kiss, and we leave the café hand in hand. We get into Diesel’s truck, and he takes me in the complete opposite direction to his house.

  “Where are we going?”

  “Wanna show you something.”

“Is it a surprise?” I prompt. “I love surprises.”

  “It is.”

  “What is it?”

He rolls his eyes. “Won’t be a surprise if I tell you.”

  “Come on!”

  “You said you love surprises.”

  “I lied. What is it?”

  He chuckles. “Wait and see.”

He leads me through the main street and then down a few quiet streets until we reach a massive library on the east side. I’ve never been to it, but I have seen it before. He gets out and opens the car door for me, and I jump out with him. “What’s the surprise?”

  “Look.”

I shake my head, confused, and look at the library that’s been recently painted and is covered in words, like the inside of a book. It’s very clever.

  “It’s beautiful.”

He chuckles and takes my hand, pulling me close. “Look.”

I start scanning the words and stop when I see it.

My smile wobbles as I realize what the words are. They’re lines from the poem he wrote that day, that I added to and put back into his locker.

  Still waters run deep,

It’s where the darkest parts of us sleep.

  In the light of day,

We’re so much more than what we say.

If we opened our soul for others to see,

The darkest parts of us might be free.

When the night came, we would no longer have to hide,

We could show who we were,

  Everything that’s inside.

Tears prick my eyes and I reach out, pulling him to my side. “It’s our poem.”

  “It’s our poem,” he confirms.

He turns to me, and I blink up at him through my tears. “How did you get it on here?”

“They were asking for words, things that were different, and I decided to give them the poem. It won a spot and was painted on today. I didn’t want to tell you until it was done.”

  “You did this for me?”

He steps closer, curling his hand around the back of my neck and pulling me close. “I did it for us. Those words mean everything to me. They mean you saw me when nobody else did. They mean you believed, even when I didn’t. They mean you freed me.”

  “I did?”

“Fuck yeah, you did. I never thought I’d smile again in my life. I never thought things would go how I wanted. Because of you, my family have freed me from the commitment of the club and have let me be who I need to be. I’ve found comfort in the loss of my mom, and I’ve found a person so beautiful, I wonder how I ever got so lucky as to find her.”

I smile, and it trembles. “I love you, even if I had to stalk my way into your life.”

He grins. “I hope you stalk your way through the rest of it, because I’d rather listen to you every single day than to be without you.”

“Even if I’m a pain in your ass?”

He leans down and kisses me. “Especially if you’re a pain in my ass.”

  God yes.

  Life is beautiful.
