I feel a presence in the room with me. I roll over and find Lucifer standing over me. The tall caramel colored man dressed in an Italian tailored red suit, black shirt and red tie greets me with a smile. “Where am I Lord?”
“E’steem’s former bedroom in my palace.” He replies. “These will be your new quarters.”
I slide out of bed and look around the bedroom suite. No wonder anything hasn’t been touched in here in over a year. It’s the room of the legendary E’steem. This place is practically a shrine. Everywhere I go I run into something associated with that bitch. “You’re promoting me?”
“You said you wanted E’steem’s job before she started working for John Haynes.”
“But I lost-”
“You showed a lot of courage in your defeat.” Lucifer continues. “Not many have the boldness to challenge the Old Guard demons like you do. Fewer persevere in the face of failure. I believe with a little seasoning you could prove to be a valuable asset to my Legion.”
This is it! My shot at the big time! “What will I be doing in my new position Lord?”
“I’ll show you. Come.”
I catch the reflection of myself in the full-length mirror on the closet door smooth out the wrinkles in my blouse and skirt before I follow Lucifer out of the bedroom down a long hardwood corridor where the musty smell of old books hits me in the face. I count off at least a thousand bookshelves in the distance as we pause in front of a desk with an older model tower computer on it. I bet this thing doesn’t even have Wi-Fi.
“You know you could just scan all of these into a database and then download them onto tablets. It’d be a lot easier for you to use.”
“That wouldn’t be practical.” Lucifer continues. “I wouldn’t want things like the first editions of the Necrinomicon and the Book of the Dead winding up on Google Books.”
My eyes grow wide. “Those are priceless-”
“Which is why I hope you’ll take great care in cataloging all the books in my library.”
“E’steem was your Librarian?”
“This is the second ranking position in All Hell.”
“Working in a library? Come, on this has to be the shittiest job in All-Hell-”
“I’m giving you the opportunity of a lifetime. A position most Old Guard and New Breed demons would covet-”
“Where’s the opportunity cataloging a bunch of old books?”
“Don’t underestimate the power of your position” Lucifer chides. “You have access to unlimited knowledge. Knowledge is a power you can use to make your position stronger when you challenge the older guard demons like E’steem in the future.”
“So you’re giving me a chance to be more powerful than E’steem?”
“She was so stuck in the past she never capitalized on the opportunity I gave her. I’m hoping you have the imagination and creativity to do so.”
Hmmm…If I studied the original ancient texts like the Necronomicon and the Book of the Dead I could easily gain the power to become the most feared she-demon in All Hell. And the next time I challenge E’steem she’d fall at my feet. That’d put those Old Guard demons like Brent and my mother on notice that we New Breed Demons are a force to be reckoned with.
“I guess I better start learning your cataloging system.”
“I’ll show you how things work.”
