Stepping from the void, Tevlok walked right into the back of a large stone block. The sudden blow to his face startled him almost causing him to step back into the portal.
Talk about being exact, he thought. Well calculated, Doctor Jensen. He smiled at the elderly scientist’s accuracy. He had appeared directly behind the stone.
He pulled up the hood of his cloak and listened. Two voices went back and forth. Something about gas and a balloon made out of animal skins.
He checked the data stream tracker attached to his left forearm. He would be required to act in less than a minute. One of the bolas hung in his right hand. It felt perfectly balanced.
Run, Eli, he heard Brady Arnold yell.
Blitzkrieg! Eli responded. The signal. Tevlok stepped from behind the stone and began to spin the bolas in his hand. Around and around it twirled. As the boy broke into a run, Tevlok released the cord holding the two balls together and flung it at his target. The bolas sliced through the air and wrapped itself around Eli Arnold’s legs. The boy stumbled and fell into his brother and the smaller tribesman.
For a brief instant, Tevlok locked eyes with the boy and he wondered if he was up to the challenges that lay ahead. Good luck, Eli, he thought and stepped behind the stone block. He stepped into the portal and returned to his own time. With a flash, the vortex disappeared.
