  Chapter Six

The three of them got into the car and drove towards the fuel yard. Elaine parked the car close to the turn off for the yard and they sat, watching the entrance just far enough away to recognize the Mayor. While watching the yard several flyers flew in and Jim did not know which one was the Mayor’s craft due to never having seen it before. So they waited watching until the Mayor appeared.

It was just as dusk was falling when Jim said, “There he is.”

Coincidentally, at the same time Edward cried out, “Jim, the craft that just landed belongs to the ECF. I recognize their logo.”

“Then our plan is going to work because everybody we want is here. Elaine, here is the registration document. Edward and I are going to get out of the car and run away. It is up to you to do the rest. Good luck!” In the next minute, the two of them were out of the car and running away as fast as they could.

Elaine too jumped out of the car and started half running after them, but her high heels appeared to hold her back. She started screaming abuse at the top of her voice.

“How dare you do this to me, Jack? How dare you play me like that! You just come back here at once. So you won’t even bother to turn around, eh?” her angry tones turned to sarcasm as she heard the approach of footsteps behind her. “You thought you gulled me, did you Jack? Nobody puts one over on Lucy Jenkins! You have no idea what I filched from you, do you? Your registration paper for your flyer! Without this, how are you going to retrieve your precious flyer?” Elaine thought it would be better for her to use a bogus name, hence the Lucy.

“Madam, can I be of any assistance? You seem distressed!”

“That man, Jack, he got me to give him five hundred dollars for his children’s charity. However, the little boy let it slip he was no charity case. I told him I was going to the authorities over the money. He tried to reason with me to not go to the authorities and even promised me something very valuable and very hard to get in return. He said the item was in his flyer, but he pretended he saw someone he knew and got me to stop the car. Then the two of them just jumped out and ran away. How dare they do that to me?”

“Madam, they may have run off because they saw me coming. They know I am after them. You see, I am the Mayor of Pluto and Jack in actuality is Jim Hawks, he stole something very valuable from me. That is why I’m chasing behind him. If you help me to catch him, I will give you a very big reward.”

“If there is anything I can do to help you, I will sir. It is an honor to meet a Mayor of a port!” Elaine decided flattery would help her intention.

“You were saying something about his registration for his flyer just now?”

Yes Sir, nobody tries a fast one on me and gets away with it. I filched his registration paper for his craft. Here it is, all registered under Jack Holmes!” Elaine hoped the Mayor would not look at the name in the form.

The Mayor’s eyes filled with greed. “If you will let me have it, I will pay you for it?”

“Why do you want it, Sir?”

“I think he would have hidden the valuables he stole from me there. I can go there and search for it.”

“But I really shouldn’t give away his registration just like that.”

“I don’t want it for keeps, just to look for my stuff. If you will wait here, I will bring it back to you.”

“Oh, will you Sir? Then I will wait for you here. But you will give me the money first, won’t you?”

“I will give the money when I come back.”

“No, thank you sir, I will keep the paper. Supposing you don’t come back?”

“Oh, of course I will come back. I am a Mayor, girl, I always keep my word. But I will pay you a hundred for the paper before I go.”

Elaine laughed. “A hundred for a paper this valuable. You must be thinking I am a fool Sir. Even Jim Hawks couldn’t fool this girl!”

The Mayor’s nostrils turned white in anger at the mention of Jim’s name. “I will pay you the money. How much do you want?”

  “A thousand!”

“That is way too much, but I suppose you will hold on to that until I pay it. So here is the money girl, now give it to me.” He snatched the paper off Elaine’s hand while thrusting a few notes at her. Elaine took the notes with a meek “Thank you.”

The Mayor turned on his heel and started towards the fuel yard. Elaine called out after him,” I will wait for you to bring that paper back here Sir!” The Mayor did not reply.

Elaine waited until he was inside the yard before she got into the car and drove forward. She found Jim and Edward waiting for her at the first turn. They got in and all three of them drove back past the fuel yard to watch proceedings from a vantage point Elaine knew of.

From afar, they could look over the yard and they were able to identify the Mayor’s rotund figure approaching their craft. His two bodyguards were following him. They all three got into the flyer and closed the doors.

Immediately, a large number of uniformed officers got off a large flyer parked close by. The insignia of the ECF could be discerned on the side of the large flyer even from this far. The officers surrounded the flyer and they could see several officers opening all the doors at once. Very soon they shepherded the Mayor and his cronies from the flyer as they came out they were each handcuffed. The officers escorted the prisoners to their larger flyer while a couple of them climbed into the smaller one. Very soon both flyers took off and flew away out of the yard.

“They must be going back to Earth!” Jim remarked.”

“I hope we never see the Mayor again and that the ECF will get back the craft I stole from them.”

“They will Edward; you saw them flying it away. Your friend Oscar will understand and forgive you, I am sure. And the Mayor will not be able to get out of jail this time with the drugs in his possession. So it is unlikely he will be able to trouble us further. Now we can start a new life here in Orleanais with Elaine, Edward.”

“Yes, let us go home!” said Elaine.

The man and the woman both held the boy’s hands as they walked back towards the car.
