  Chapter Fifteen

Shanna could hear the echoes of the others following her as she ran along the tunnels at random, turning corners quickly, and stumbling in places. She had no sense of direction, her only objective to put as much distance between them and the werewolves as possible.

After running for nearly ten minutes straight, Shanna had to stop, out of breath, and leaned against the wall, panting, as the others came to a halt as well. She gulped in air greedily and wiped the sweat that had gathered at her brow.

“I think I’m getting used to the smell,” Rachel said, after a moment.

  “Good,” Shanna grunted.

“No. I should, in no situation, ever be used to this smell. Can you imagine how many showers it’s going to take to get this smell out?”

Shanna chuckled as she looked back toward the boys.

Brett looked winded as well, but Quinn seemed to be doing fine, eyes shining as he looked back in the direction they’d come. He turned around and met her gaze suddenly, and his set jaw melted into a smile. “I was in track,” he shrugged as he took in the others.

Shanna frowned then, and stood up straight. “Where’s Cameron?”

Rachel looked up as well. “Wasn’t he right behind us?”

“He was,” Quinn insisted, looking back.

“He told us to go ahead,” Brett offered with a shrug. “Said the more scents going in different directions meant less of them following us.”

Shanna exchanged a worried look with Rachel. “And you just let him go?”

“Yeah. Not like I had a lot of time to think about it. He just ran down a different tunnel.”

“Damn,” Shanna began to chew nervously on a nail. “I have to go back for him.”

“No way,” Quinn shook his head. “Cameron did this to give us a chance to escape. He’ll probably go top-side when he encounters another way out, and we’ll meet up and you can hug and kiss then.”

Rachel put a supportive hand on Shanna’s shoulder. “You wouldn’t even know where to look.”

Shanna nodded slowly, then heaved a sigh. “Alright. I guess we should keep going then.”

  “I guess so.”

Sending one last look back over her shoulder, Shanna led the others further into the sewers’ depths.
