world naturally obscured by cosmic anomalies? Would the barrier double, triple or quadruple the time for opening a portal from outside?”

I answered, “The barrier would be augmented exponentially, rendering the protected world nigh impossible if not impossible to open a portal to.” The alien grinned and my skin crawled.

The next few days were spent gathering and selecting what little we would actually bring back with us. Most of the equipment we brought would be left behind, so as to make room for artifacts. The Sentinels would be left behind for they were tasked with maintaining possession of the facility. “I’ll miss you,” I told Darya Red.

“Why?” she responded. “I’ll be doing my duty.”

“I’ll miss you because we shall be parted.” My sister smiled.

A Concubine Sentinel is as human as the rest of us. She may forsake her humanity as an act of will but willpower has no power over one’s nature. Her inhuman devotion is entirely human for it is her natural yearning to do what is right. I so admire our selfless and fearless Girls in Red.

Shadow Station 13 was under an electromagnetic umbrella which protected it from scanning, bombardment and air assault. Nothing fast or ionized could penetrate the barrier. An aircraft flying slowly into it would lose power and crash. On the day we were to leave the electromagnetic charge reversed: Our entomopter would lose power and crash if we tried to fly away. I whispered to my Priestess, “Ma’am, I suggest we place the alien under arrest until an investigation concludes he is not responsible.”

I could see my sister’s white eyes rolling behind the blackness of her goggles. She asked me, “Are you tasked with security?”

“Obviously not,” I was offended by the sarcasm.

Zendanna assured me, “This is a very old facility. Our current problem is not the first here to vex us.”

Our Sentinels were scattered among the corridors of the station. They noticed but paid no heed as the golems supposedly went about their duties. Our Girls in Red were caught unawares quite easily.
