From there the evening wore on. Everyone missed the late Sunday night football game and all the predictive programming that went with it as hundreds of the congregation rededicated their lives to God intent on forsaking the cares of the world in the process.
One night turned into a week. A week in which Desirée poured her life out in both prayer and song to a growing audience of believers and those who were simply curious and had come in to see the show that everyone was talking about in town.
At last the revival came to an end and it was with reluctance that Desirée saw it come to a close. With the revival over it meant that once more she had to face the dangers of the open road.
For the past week Desirée had stayed in the blessed homes of believers and had known safety by the sheer volume of the prayers directed to God in the moment, but now most would forget her within a few days and some the entire revival that she had helped to facilitate.
Not everyone would forget, but many would. For her now was the time when living became dangerous once more.
Lonigan glanced up at the rearview mirror to stare back at her in the backseat of the retired police car that he’d picked up at a used car lot a few months back and gruffly inquired, “You ready for this kid?”
With a shrug and a customary inward shiver that she tried to never show evidence of she said, “Ready or not here we go. What’s next?”
“Detroit.”
“Detroit it is.”
Lonigan swerved the car down a side street and began a series of evasive maneuvers that were hard to equal. The game once more had begun.
Not needing to look back she could sense the pursuit of their car that was already unfolding. It was always like this.
How long could it go on before it went too far?
Summoning up a hidden reserve of nerve she forced herself to dwell on the results and memories of the past week instead of the darkness of the situation at hand. The people, if they even were that, behind them wanted to kill her.
In a way she had escaped the reservation and until she was chased down and exterminated she represented a significant threat not to mention embarrassment to the New World Order elite, who wanted nothing of what she had to say to reach the ears of the masses, who hadn’t awoken to the sheen of fake virtual reality that had been constructed around the pathways to their souls.
