She awoke to the sound of song birds echoing in the woods. She instinctively looked for her food dish and bowl of water. Quickly realizing that she was no longer a prisoner in cage but a free animal. Something she never experienced in her young life. There were no humans to be seen nor heard. Which was also another first in her life.
She stood on her two legs and stretched with her arms above her head. For the first time in her life she was alone. It didn't seem so bad. But, her stomach was telling her it was time to eat and there was no one to bring the food. So, as nice as freedom was, she knew it was time to find a human to feed her.
She began walking, in no particular direction. Perhaps it was more of her stomach leading the way, since she did not know where she was going to end up.
A flock of squawking crows overhead seemed intriguing and yet somehow disturbing at the same time, since she never seen these large black colored birds before. She was slightly concerned that it was her they were complaining about. But, since they were no threat to her, she knew she was safe to continue in the direction she had chosen travel. The grass was still slightly damp from the rain from the night before. The sun was shining through the leaves above warming her dark fur.
It was like discovering a new world. The sounds and the smells were all new to her. She heard a crack and looked over her shoulder. There stood looking back at her was a whitetail doe. The deer's ear flinched as they stared at each other. Finally the doe shook her tail and trotted off.
A small bird landed on a branch near her head. “Chic-a-dee-dee-dee.” The little bird cocked his head toward her as if trying to figure out what she was. “Chic-a-dee-dee-dee.” The little chickadee hopped to another nearby branch.
She walked over an hour before finally seeing an opening coming up. The woods were finally coming to an end. The summer sun had warmed up the morning.
As she approached the opening she heard an unfamiliar sound. She did not know what to make of it. It got louder the closer she got to the opening. When she reached the edge of the opening she stood and listened longer. Finally turning her head and seeing the source of the sound. It was the smallest human she had ever seen.
Six year old Katherine Collins was sitting at a small plastic picnic table with two of her dolls, humming a content little tune. Her table was set with her little porcelain dishes along with a larger plastic bowl filled her favorite cheese crackers.
The dark haired little girl was unaware of the hairy creature that was moving closer to her table. Her humming came to an abrupt stop when she looked up and saw the creature standing before her table. Katherine's eyes widened and her mouth dropped. Slowly her surprised look changed to a slight smile. “I know who you are. You won't hurt me, will you?” Katherine lifted her bowl of cheese crackers and offered it to the creature.
A large hairy hand reached into the bowl and took a handful of crackers and shoved them into her large mouth.
Katherine took one of her small porcelain tea cups and placed it on the table in front of her new friend and proceeded to lift her little tea pot and began to pour. To the creature's surprise, nothing came out of the little pot. She looked at the pot, looked up at Katherine, and looked back at the empty little tea cup.
Then Katherine began pouring into her cup and then began pouring into the cups in front of her two dolls. The creature watched curiously as Katherine poured the tea pot since nothing was coming out. To the creature's surprise, Katherine lifted the empty tea cup to her mouth and it looked as if she was drinking. The creature looked back at her own cup, as if to expect to find something in there now.
“Would you like more crackers Miss... ah. Miss... Bigfoot.” Katherine finally decided to call her. Without hesitation, Miss Bigfoot eagerly took some more of the cheese crackers Katherine was offering.
“Katherine! Come here dear!”
“That's my mom.” Katherine told her new friend Miss Bigfoot. “Wait here I'll be right back.”
Katherine jumped up and ran to the small house behind her.
Katherine opened the sliding glass door to her house. “Katherine, Mrs. Johnson just called and said her husband saw what looked like a black bear on his trail camera this morning. I think you should stay inside today.”
“No mama, it wasn't a bear. It was Miss Bigfoot. She was at my tea party. I have to go back.”
Her mother shook her head in slight bewilderment. “No, Katherine. Put you shoes on we should run to town now anyways.”
“But, my tea party.”
“Your dolls should be fine till we get back. Now get your shoes on so we can leave.”
“I don't know where my shoes are.”
“They are under the table. Right where you left them last night.”
Tom Johnson loaded his rifle. “That was no black bear. I found its tracks and it is something I have never encountered before. Some kind of primate I think.”
Todd Carlson put his pistol in his holster. “Are you thinking, something like a Sasquatch?”
“Footprints were not as big as I would expect. Perhaps it's a young one. I want to get back out there before it gets too far.”
Both men walk carefully past the trail camera that took the picture of the creature earlier that morning. They quickly picked up its trail, finding footprints in the soft ground from the rain from the previous night. The two men were skilled hunters and followed the trail through the woods till it finally came to the opening where the creature had encountered Katherine Collins.
The two men walked up to the small plastic picnic table. The table still had Katherine's porcelain tea set still on the table and one of her dolls on the seat of the table.
“It was here for awhile.” Tom Johnson said looking puzzled. “These tracks here are very fresh. Let's keep moving.”
The creature sat high up in a crook of an old tree as the two men passed below. Clenched inside her hands she held one of Katherine's dolls she had at the picnic table. After the men had passed, she climbed down and headed back towards Katherine's house.
Katherine had returned to gather her things from her small picnic table. “There you are Miss Bigfoot. Where did you go? Are you hungry? I can give you something to eat. I'll be right back.” Katherine ran back to her house and Miss Bigfoot slowly followed behind, still carrying the small doll.
Miss Bigfoot climbed up the steps to the wooden deck on the back of the house and waited for her friend to return from inside the house.
That was twenty years ago. Katherine never saw her friend Miss Bigfoot after that day. She was never captured and never seen again. Well, except for an occasional sighting. A sighting of a dark haired creature that cannot be identified.
