to form, or perhaps you were too preoccupied. It is also possible that my magic is different than—”

“Stop that.” She stopped and focused on him. “Better. Makes me dizzy.” He turned and moved to the end of the room. An ornate pendant, an enchanting piece of two feathered wings held by a golden chain, hung on a plaque. “Somehow this looks familiar.”

They moved to his side. Myraza ran her fingers over it. “Beautiful.”

“Agree.” Charis held her fist to her mouth. “Raz?”

“Absolutely not.” Lex sneered. “We have no way of knowing who owned it or if it holds a curse or some other magical trap. I’m fine without knowing.”

Yet he seemed unable to look away, and both women noticed. Myraza and Charis exchanged curious glances. The dancer tipped her head towards the object and lifted an eyebrow. Encouraged, Myraza set her hand on it to search its memories.

As it turned out, it did hold a spell of protection, but the effects had weakened over the years. Myraza managed to bypass the grab at her mind as she stalked the darkness in search for the reason Lex would recognize the necklace.

The answer came in form of a black and white rose that grew into the shadowed form of a man. Wings extended from his back until he began to fall, then the feathers deteriorated and the wings crumbled. This was all the necklace had to tell, so she released the image, allowing it to rest as her mind retreated.

Charis studied Lex with concern. The prince looked to the ground, his eyes moist and body trembling. Myraza blinked out of the stupor that held her, puffed frigid breath into the air, and started shivering. Her discomfort fell at that of a friend.

  “Lex? What is wrong?”

“Wish I knew.” He took a deep breath and wiped his eyes. “Likely an effect of magic that shouldn’t be toyed with. Let’s get out of here before anything else happens.” He turned on his heel, grabbing the wrists of both women. “Now.”

Charis looked to Myraza for help understanding, but her confusion amounted to the same level. Myraza wasn’t about to ask, so their answers would need to wait until he was ready to confide in her. The darkness swallowed the truth.
