Read Forever True - Book Four of the Connor True Series Page 4

nodded with a subtle cough towards the entrance to the ward. Laura turned to see someone standing by the double doors. He was tall, dressed in jeans and dazzlingly white shirt. His mop of hair was just visible over the top of the large bouquet of colourful flowers in his hand. As he closed the door behind him he lowered the flowers and scanned the waiting area before heading towards the reception desk with a cheeky lop-sided grin.

“Oh, my god!” Laura whispered in a strangled voice to Betty but the ward clerk didn’t reply. She had discreetly moved to the filing cabinet leaving Laura all alone. She wanted to say so much to Connor but her mouth had suddenly gone dry and she didn’t know what to say as he came over to her.

“Hello” Connor said holding out the flowers to Laura. They smelled lovely, and so did he.

“I should have come in sooner but I’ve…” he paused and looked at Laura. She waited watching his mouth fall open and for a moment he had that sweet vulnerable look he had had when he slept. He shook his head slightly and said “I’m sorry. Forgive me. It’s just that I recognise you. Its Laura isn’t it? I think I had a dream about you once… My sisters talked about you as well and I just wanted to say thank you for looking after me while I was here”.

Suddenly Laura was holding the flowers.

“You’re sisters are really nice. Especially Amelia, she’s so cute” Laura said a little too quickly, worried that he may think she was a dizzy air-head who babbled away non-stop.

“Yeah, she knows it to” Connor grinned.

“You timed you’re visit well, another few minutes and I would have finished my shift and would have missed you” Laura heard herself saying.

“I’m glad I caught you to” Connor continued. “I phoned in earlier and they told me you were about to finish for the day and I wanted to make sure I saw you”. Laura quickly picked up one of the blue files from the reception desk and hugged it to her chest. It was all she could do to remain professional and stop herself from jumping up and down like a school girl. It was bad enough she was grinning like a Cheshire Cat.

“Can I walk you out of here” he asked so casually that Laura had to ask him to repeat the question. Then she felt foolish and said “I’ve heard so much about you from your family. I feel like I know you already”. Then she felt even more foolish then but Connor didn’t seem to notice.

“I’ll just finish up and I’ll see you in five minutes” she said, turning and trying very hard not to skip back down the corridor to the nurses’ station.

Her Prince had come at last.
