Chapter4
Natalie woke up the next morning, still feeling miserable, but she got up all the same. “Hey dad,” she yawned as she trotted down the stairs. “Morning, sweetie,” he smiled. Natalie glanced at her breakfast. Yum. She gobbled down her beacon and eggs feast quickly and shouldered her backpack. “Laters,” she called as she walked out the door. “Bye, sweet heart,” her dad replied. Ten minutes later, Natalie arrived at school just in time as the bell rang. She hurried to her locker and fumbled for her schedule. “History first today,” she muttered, glancing at her watch. “Let’s see . . .” she scanned her schedule for the room. “Room 200,” she murmured and hurried to class. Half way there, she saw Grace waiting outside the Girl’s bathroom, as if she was waiting for someone. And that someone seems to be . . . ME! She realized with a jolt. “Where were you yesterday?” Grace demanded when Natalie reached her. Her steps slowed. She winced sheepishly. “A friend came over,” she replied meekly. Grace stared at her in surprise. “I thought you were sick or something, because you never forget. Until now, anyway,” she said angrily. Natalie frowned. “I didn’t forget anything,” she replied, annoyed. “Well, if you don’t remember, then I won’t tell you,” she snapped, a hint of a snarl in her voice. “Fine!” Natalie exclaimed, eyes blinking in hurt. “Fine,” Grace sneered and stalked off. “Some friend you turned out to be.” Natalie blinked away tears and hurried to class. Just as she was about to enter the class, she bumped into someone, head on! But that person turned out to be . . . Jessica Wang.
Kate
Kate hurried to her locker the morning feeling hollow and empty. When she opened her locker, a yellow note fluttered out. It read, “Meet me at my house after school. Call your mom. Let her know –Natalie.” Kate smiled sorrowfully and wondered what Natalie wanted. She checked her watch and saw that she still had time before first period. Kate hurried towards the office. “Very well. However, you must call me when you arrive,” her mother agreed. “Thanks!” Kate smiled happily for the first time since yesterday’s news. Perhaps good luck will finally find me, she thought hopefully.
Natalie
Natalie fell back a step. “What do you want?” she said coldly. As she said that, she realized that she wasn’t afraid, like others were. Jessica smiled a sly and secretive smiled. “Just stay out of my,” she replied. A crowd began to gather around them. “I heard they used to be best friends,” a voice murmured in the crowd. Please say that she didn’t hear it, Natalie pleaded silently. But no such luck. Sure enough, Jessica heard it. “Who said that?” she growled, whirling around, her hand curled into a fist. Caught by surprise, her victim had turned to face her, but Jessica's fist made contact with it instead. Blood squirted out of the girl’s now—broken nose. Natalie stood there, shocked and stunned. Fortunately, Mr. McDonald finally saw what kind of things Jessica Wang was capable of and gave her 3 months of detention. Natalie unfroze and breathed a sigh of relief when Jessica was sent away and the girl had gone to the bathroom to get her nose cleaned up. Now all she had to find out was whether or not Kate could come to her house.
Kate
“Hooray!” Natalie cheered, pushing her fist up in the air in triumph. Kate laughed. Natalie could be really funny sometimes. “Okay, so what did you want to talk to me about?” Kate lowered her voice as the librarian shushed them. They were at the library; it was now lunch. Natalie glanced around her. No one was close enough to hear what she said next. “I'm having a party and all my friends are invited. You too,” she added, looking at her questioning face. But probably not Grace, she thought. Natalie had been so busy this morning that she hadn’t had the chance to think about the Grace problem until now. “I’ll talk to her in third period,” she decided aloud. “Well, maybe Grace, but I want you to help with the party planning,” Natalie continued, as if she hadn’t spoken. “That is, only if you want to,” she added. Kate felt a surge of enthusiasm. “Of course,” she exclaimed. “Are we going to start today?” Natalie nodded. “But we’re going to start with the theme first, though.” She explained. Maybe my life can be saved! Kate thought, nodding. She hugged Natalie and was glad when she hugged her back. “Now, we’ve got some party planning to do,” Natalie whispered as they pulled apart. Kate grinned. “Yup.” They gathered their books and hurried out of the library as the lunch bell rang.
Natalie
Natalie hurried to Science class and grabbed a seat just as the last warning bell rang. This time, though, she wasn’t as lucky. Mrs. Fields gave her a late slip. Natalie sighed and found that she was seated right next to Grace. Grace had her back to Natalie. Then she turned around and glared at her. Natalie stared back in surprise. “I'm sorry, I don’t remember what it is that I forgot; can you tell me and be my friend again?” she blurted out. Grace’s face softened at the sound of the distress in Natalie’s voice. “Okay,” she said softly. “Thanks,” Natalie beamed.
Kate
Kate smiled out of Natalie’s father’s car window. They were on their way to the carnival. Yesterday, Kate and Natalie decided on an underwater park theme for the party. Kate thought the props and decorations were beautiful. Just then, the car jolted to a sudden stop, but not fast enough to avoid the accident. Caught by surprise, Kate knocked her head of the back seat, the air bags and went unconscious.
Chapter5
Kate’s eyes fluttered open to discover her mother, father and Natalie all gathered beside her bed in chairs. Kate swung her aching head from side to side slowly. “Where am I?” she asked weakly. “Shh,” her mother stood up and smoothed her hair. “You’re in the hospital, darling,” she whispered. “Why?” Kate asked in confusion. “There was a car accident. You got hit and your skull cracked. My dad . . . he got hit fully. He—he’s dead,” it was Natalie who answered this time. Her voice broke. Natalie’s eyes were bloodshot, red and puffy, as if she’d been crying for days. Kate felt sadness and pain well up inside of her. Natalie’s dad was a fun, caring and nice person. He didn’t deserve to be killed like this. Kate felt tears coming along, but she didn’t stop them. She was too frail and weak with all the pain and sorrow from both her skull and Natalie’s dad. Kate didn’t know what to think. She remembered the accident clearly now. But she felt lightheaded and shaky. She fainted.
Natalie
Natalie gasped as Kate fainted. Kate’s mom stood up sharply. “Natalie, will you please tell the doctor that Kate has fainted?” Natalie nodded and hurried to the doctor next door that was supposed to be for Kate. Natalie knocked on the door. “Kate Standers has fainted,” Natalie explained when he looked up. The doctor gave her a swift nod and gathered up his things. “Lead the way,” He said. When they arrived at Kate’s station, the heart monitor showed Kate’s heartbeat slowing. Natalie paled. “Thank you, Natalie,” said Kate’s mother. She barely responded. “You’re welcome,” she whispered. The doctor made a full inspection. Just as he was finishing up, Kate’s heartbeat faded even more. But this time, it was barely alive. Her heartbeat died, her breathing slowed, her eyes didn’t flicker, and her chest stopped. Kate Standers was dead.
