Read Going Rogue Page 9

“I’ll be in touch, Alexa,” he says and laughs, pushing off the car. “Try to stay out of trouble.”

And then he walks away, and I find myself wondering where the heck he’s going.

“Dude, was that who I think it was?” Levi says from beside me. I jump, not noticing he’d left the car. “It was, wasn’t it? That was Death.”

I nod and turn to face him. “Yep. It sure was.”

“Wow. He’s not what I expected.”

“Tell me about it,” I say.

“Did I get you in shit for helping me?” he asks, dropping his bashful gaze. It’s odd. Levi is one of the most confident people I’ve ever met, and yet, at this moment he looks almost... shy. “I can talk to him. Maybe smooth it out. If he knows you were doing it for me...”

“Nah, it’s just a suspension,” I say and smile. “It’s all good. I need a vacation anyway.”

  Levi doesn’t look convinced.

“Really, it’s all good,” I say again. “You ready to move on, bud?”

“Yeah,” he says and nods. “It’s getting really hard to ignore it. The dang light is a persistent bugger.”

  “I bet.”

Levi looks off to the right, just beyond my car, and as he does, his light appears, shining brightly under the cloudy sky. He takes a step toward it, then stalls, and glances over his shoulder. “Thank you, Alexa, for everything,” he says. “This was by far the best adventure I’ve ever had.”

I watch him go, feeling an overwhelming sense of pride and accomplishment. I may have bent some rules, but I’m almost certain I’d do it all again.

The light disappears as soon as Levi steps into it. I stand there for a moment, staring at the empty space he just filled, and I realize I’m going to miss the guy.

Eventually, I turn to my car. There’s no point in sticking around, not unless I want to be bombarded with questions. Besides, my shower and bed are calling my name.

I open the door, and am just about to climb in, when I hear someone shout, “Alexa, hold up a second.”

I turn toward the sound, smiling as I spot Cameron jogging toward me, and I wave. “Hey. I thought we weren’t supposed to talk until you were cleared of any wrongdoing.”

Cameron stops in front of me and waves a dismissive hand. “It’s open and closed. No biggie.”

“Good,” I say, and I mean it because the last thing I want is him getting into trouble for my stupidity. “You okay?”

“Yeah, sure,” he says, but it’s a lie, and his smile falls just a little. “Lets talk about it over dinner. Tomorrow. Sound good?”

I smile wide. “Yeah,” I say. “That sounds great.”

  THE END... for now.

Alexa’s adventures continue with Secrets & Lies coming August 2018.
