“If you want something in life, sometimes you have to be brave enough to ask for it.”
Hello reader,
I am Adam, I was born in America some 41 years ago to a poor but well educated family. I grew up in Maine and North Carolina and later moved to California.
I have had the misfortune of acquiring a felony conviction when I was 19 years old. The nature of the crime was I did not have the money to register my vehicle, and so as I needed to get to work to earn said money I used my friends plate from his junked car that still had proper “tags” , mind you that he willingly loaned me the plate so I could get to work (at that time I was a tile setter apprentice to earn my way through University that I was attending while working) I was pulled over for failure to use a turn signal and the police “ran” my plate number to find it was not for my car, and even as the plate was not stolen, nor was the car… They towed my car and slapped me with a felony charge (false plates is a felony charge, stolen or not) I spent a few months in jail for that before my trial (I did not have the money for bail, nor did my parents) and during that time I of course lost my job and missed a massive amount of classes at University.
My trial came and I was convicted and released (as it was not a violent or drug related felony it was marked as “time served” and I could go home.
I went home and I went back to my University and I did extra credit work to catch up with the class. I found a new job with tile setting and life returned to normal.
I finished my Bachelor degree and with the help of my good grades and allot of financial aid I was able to enroll in a Master’s degree program in Political Philosophy. I attended the post graduate program for one year then transferred to another University in the U.K. to finish my degree. I did indeed finish that degree and from there I went out into the world to seek a living.
I had been offered a post in Malaysia at a large University, the salary was sufficient and the lecturing was great, I soon discovered that I had a natural talent for lecturing, it became not only my “job” but also something I found very rewarding personally.
While I was working at that University the president of that University then offered me a chance to improve my level of education, he needed more PhD holders within his University and he offered to pay half of my tuition towards a PhD degree as long as I signed a contract to continue working with his University for at least 3 years after I achieved the degree and that my dissertation would become part of his Universities library as well as anything I published during the 3 years of contract.
This was a great offer and one that benefited both myself and the University so I accepted the offer.
I again returned to the University in the U.K. I had graduated from with my Master’s degree. And soon I was back with old friends and study heroes.
The Malaysian university was now opening campuses in Africa, and as I had now completed my classroom activities for my Doctorate I was now free to roam the world and write my dissertation, as my subject of research was the political and social development of African third world nations as dictated by super power military availability (a mouthful yes, the actual title of my dissertation is double that length!) As the University had need of me in southern Africa and my dissertation needed on the ground research in Southern Africa off I went.
I worked (as head of department of Social Sciences) at the new campus and in the evenings and on the weekends I worked on my dissertation.
Two years passed like a race car and I was now finished with my dissertation, re-writes complete and had traveled back to the U.K. for my defense of my work.
In 2009 I was then the proud holder of a Doctorate of Political Science in International Relations.
I finished my contracted term of employment with that Malaysian University and then decided to return to my own country (America) to seek gainful employment with my now 7 years of lecturing experience, department head experience and my flashy new degree.
I was confidant, I was wrongfully confidant…
Back in America I had a few interviews set up already with a few very good Universities, I had all my ducks in a row as they say, ready to make “that” job mine.
However as it so turns out, in America no University (public or privet) is allowed (by law) to hire a convicted felon. The type of felony matters not, the conviction is the point. In fact as Universities are required to have insurance (another law) and insurance companies will not allow felons on the grounds of an insured university, just by being at the interviews I was breaking 2 or 3 different laws!
That motor vehicle violation from nearly 20 years before had now become like a cancer…
I had no option but to again leave America to seek gainful employment, should I have stayed my only option would be to work at a fast food restaurant or as a stock boy at a Wal-Mart… with all the other “felons”…
So now here it is many years later, as I mentioned I am 41 years old, I now live in Cambodia, I am a Dean of a University now (great title but don’t forget this is Cambodia so the salary is less than peanuts) I love my job and I am really good at it too.
I am now married to a wonderful woman, she is a teacher here in Cambodia, and we just had our first child a month before the writing of this, our son is the most beautiful thing I have ever seen, and I am amazed daily that I could make something so wonderful.
Our child is happy, healthy and seems to have no problems at all, we are exceptionally lucky, we are also very happy together.
I work hard at my job, and although I make much more than the local Cambodian would make I still find my self living pay check to pay check. We never have enough money for anything “nice” we can pay our bills and put food on our table, but that’s it. Nothing extra for a holiday or even a nice sofa…
I am tired.
Tired of being poor.
And yes I am sure all poor people feel the same way, but I have put a massive amount of effort into not being poor, my education my experience and my strong ethics. I never shy away from work, I am not lazy I am not a freeloader, and I have never asked anyone for anything for free…
Until now.
I need a million dollars.
Not 2 or 3 million, not 10 million, no, just 1 million dollars.
1 million
That would do this for me and family.
First we could buy some land. ( a small plot here in the city we live in)
Second I could build my family a good home, not a huge mansion, just a good clean comfortable home to raise my son within.
Thirdly my wife could open her own language school here in the city (that is her dream) with my help as a consultant and her experience in that trade she will do well with this project.
Fourthly I can spend a large part of my days with my son, (presently I have 1 or 2 hours in the evening after work to see him) I could also dedicate the rest of my time to writing (my truest love in life is writing, I have a few novels already, they do not make me rich but they examples of my desire to write) so I could raise my son in the best possible environment (I do not mean the most expensive environment, I mean the best quality environment, My parents had little money but they raised me in a quality environment).
A good safe home.
My wife’s dream (open a school) comes true.
A chance to see my son grow into a man.
A chance to pursue my writing.
So it comes down to this, If you (reader) are a multi-millionaire or a billionaire, then I would like to present to you this:
This is not a
loan, I would not ever repay this 1 million dollars.
This “gift” of 1 million would make one small family very happy, create a new situation for a young boy, and literally change my son’s future from yet another poor well educated man to that of a boy who can have opportunity beyond that of his father.
This is not an investment, while a small amount of it will in fact be used by my wife to open a school, the school she wants to open is not a school designed for profit, but rather a school to teach Cambodian orphans English and French in hopes that the new languages can offer the little orphans a better chance in life. And while I would be writing books with my time I would not need the profits from the sales thus I would agree to donate all book sales profits to my local poverty filled city (orphanages, HIV care centers, drug rehabilitation centers, etc. Cambodia is literally full of need and needy people)
With 1 million dollars, my family could do all the above mentioned (so your million does much more than just help one family, but the community surrounding that family also benefits greatly) and as well provide my family with a living.
We (my wife and I) have worked out the numbers, and our family could live in comfort and safety for $3,000 a month (remember this is Cambodia, much cheaper cost of living then in America or Europe). Thus your 1 million would support my family for the rest of my life, as well as open a school for the disadvantaged, as well as cover any unforeseen medical emergencies, as well as provide a stable home life for my son and most importantly for me a chance for a father to “be there” for his son.
So in closing…
I need a million dollars.
Now you can just give it to me
Or
Or
You could buy 100,502 copies of my book Interzone Incorporated in paperback edition from Lulu.com (The cover price is $17.95 but I make 9.95 off each sale)
Now the two “buy my book” options would actually cost you far more than 1million and I do not think you became rich by spending more than you need to, so my I suggest the first option, just give me 1 million dollars.
Now, you could invest that million, you could get even richer from it, yes true.
You could spend it all on a few really nice cars or some great home for the summers, and that’s cool, heck it is YOUR money after all.
Or you could give it to me and know you changed the lives of one family for the better and also vicariously changed the lives of many more people beyond that family for the better.
So, Thank you for your time in reading this, I hope that whatever you decide to do with your money that it makes you happy.
