  Chapter Four

It took the two of them another two hours (and numerous attacks against zombies) to finally find a place that seemed reasonable. It was another apartment complex, one that had working electricity as well as running water but no gasoline. Still, as tired as they were, it was better than nothing. This time, the two of them made their home on the fourth floor, barricading the stairs and elevators with furniture from other vacant rooms.

It was a room in the middle of the hallway that the two of them were to call their hideout. When Zack entered the apartment, he quickly made an assessment of the place. Whoever lived in this place before the two of them, that person was obviously single, evident from the lack of decorative furniture throughout. Quickly, Zack started to unplug all of the appliances that would only suck away the precious electricity that they would need to help them survive.

“Is there anything I can do to help,” Anna asked, not wanting to feel completely useless.

“Can you take out all of the light bulbs except for ones in the living room and bathroom,” Zack announced to her, still exploring. “We don’t need the one in the kitchen since the living room is so close to it.”

“Right, sure,” Anna said, pulling a chair from the table to help her reach the ceiling.

It wasn’t until the sun was beginning to set that the two of them felt that they could relax for a bit. There was a perfect view of the mountains from the kitchen window, one that caught the glimpse of the sun saying its farewell for the day. It was here where Anna appreciated Zack’s rule in not turning on the lights when there was still a little bit of sunlight left in the day. Views like this would only come a few times in a lifetime, and now it was even rarer.
