Chapter Three: Autumn Packs a Punch

I am soooo glad yesterday was Friday. I won’t have to hear any more complaints about Suzy for two whole days. I ran out of the classroom yesterday when the three o’clock bell sounded. I couldn’t take anymore teasing from the other kids at school.

Although I heard sarcastic remarks nearly all day, the mocking reached its peak at lunch. At lunchtime, Scotty Riggs, Billy Dupree, and Jamie Taylor decided that it would be fun to serenade me at lunch. They formed a semi-circle around my table and continuously howled “Owww, Owww” until Autumn ran them off.

All three of the boys are in our spelling class. Jamie used to threaten to beat Autumn up if she didn’t let him copy her homework. He taunted her every day until she finally had enough of the threats and let him have it.

On the walk home from school one day, Jamie kept tugging at Autumn’s ponytail as he harassed her for her homework.

“I’m gonna yank your pony tail right off your head if you don’t give me your spelling homework,” Jamie threatened.

“Yeah, then you’ll have a big bald spot in the top of your head. Instead of Autumn, we’ll call you Fall because it will look like all of your hair has fallen out like the leaves on a tree,” joked Scotty.

  “Ouch. Stop it!” demanded Autumn.

“What are you going to do about it?” Jamie asked as he shoved her in the back of the shoulder.

I couldn’t believe what happened next. Autumn turned around and walloped Jamie square in the eye.

Scotty and Billy looked confused as Jamie sat on the sidewalk holding his left eye. Jamie was the largest of the three boys. Scotty and Billy usually followed his every move. With their leader injured, Scotty and Billy just stood there clueless.

“I told you to stop,” Autumn reminded Jamie.

The three boys never bothered her again. They quickly quit teasing me about Suzy when Autumn approached. I’m glad I have her as a best friend. Maybe she can help me solve my problem with Suzy. Oh well, we have a whole week to solve that problem. Today, we have bigger fish to fry.
