and watched . Simon with his wife and dog were moving up the hill. The bell hung from the tree silent. Even the wind in the creek had not the strength to move it.
Joey was heart broken...he had made the bell for home, for the synagogue. Now he had lost it. There could be no turning back.
The boat moved softly through the water whilst the men cheered. They were free and they were going home.
Suddenly from the shore they heard it, the bell.
No one stood by the rope. It moved on its own and it rang true and clear in the sunny morning. Joey wept then, tears rolling down his cheeks unchecked. It was bidding them farewell. It was a good bell....it would last for a long time. Anyone hearing it would know that it was a gift from a far away land. A stranger had made the bell to praise God, one God, no matter what his name, and the bell would be the visible and the audible sign.
Epilogue
We don't know how the legend started about Jesus visiting these shores but we do know that they were visited by the Celtic Christians saints from Ireland who arrived in their coracles. Many set up hermitages here and founded churches built on the sites of those first cells which bear their names. Many Celtic saints are also to be found in Brittany and we share several names with them.
Our church of St Just is one of those churches and there is a tangible feeling of holiness as you approach it. This feeling reported by many is we think some sort of evidence that it is a place of stillness and mystery, an atmosphere left behind by the holy men who prayed here over the years.
Around the coastal corner is the church of St Anthony. Inside this there is a bell, high in the roof, used to summon Christians to worship!
When it fell a few years ago onto a tiled floor nothing was damaged, the bell and tiles remained intact. The copper it contained was tested. It was not mined in this country.
I have used this as part of the story....that is not poetic licence.
We have no knowledge as to how it got here. But it could be as described here. Stranger things are true!
What ever you take away from this little book, it is written in prayer and good faith....it is a work of imagination and it does I hope reflect the peace and holiness found here. It is possible.
