Read Joyride Page 8

  Chapter 8

It's now a few weeks after the horrific ordeal I had to endure. I'm staying at my auntie’s house my mum’s youngest sister Kelly who also had no idea what it was my mum was into. Unfortunately Polly has gone to live with her dad, I miss her so much and go to see her every opportunity I can.

Karl's funeral is next week on the 8th June, then my mums on the 10th. Time is tough for me right now and I’m finding it all difficult to come to terms with. Karl's parents are devastated by it all and hold me responsible. Mick said - 'if I ever set eyes on you again you’re a dead man!' and know he means it so keep away at the moment until they come round, although, I am aloud to Karl's funeral.

The police have given me a full briefing on what my mother had been up to and she didn’t tell me to protect me. Apparently, the illegal cooperation she was heading was carrying out corrupt work for the UK government. The operation was framing heads of extremist groups for crimes they didn’t commit in order to create opportunities to begin an underground operation to start the deportation of any non-British residents back to their original countries, which was called "Clean up Op".

The problem I'm now faced with is that I may have government officials looking for me and my brief has instructed me under no circumstances to reveal the identification of any of the men I saw during my ordeal as this would put me under threat.

Today is the 6th of June only two days until Karl's funeral and to be honest I'm nervous. I'm aloud to take time out of school now until the end of the summer holidays, which seems to be the only good thing going on right now.

I'm in the kitchen sitting at the breakfast bar drinking coffee when Kelly walks in.

'Morning James, how do you feel this morning?'

'Not too bad, miss mum though.'

'I know you do sweetheart, we all do and we are all shocked at what's happened.' She walks over to me and gives me a cuddle as a means of support.

'I promise everything will get better just get this week out of the way, you'll see.'

'Thanks Kelly.' She kisses me on the head and exits the kitchen. I decide, as it’s a nice day to go for a walk, think things through in my head.

As soon as I'm out of sight I pull a packet of cigarettes from my pocket and light up. I take a long deep drag filling my lungs with toxins at the same time giving me a feeling of relaxation.

I walk over to the park where Karl and I used to hang out. I sit on a bench just in front of the children's play area looking into space thinking. Many thoughts fly round in my head, mainly the thought of my mum pointing a gun to my face with no remorse, not a care in the world and think that image will stay with me for the rest of my life.

I hear a voice and a giggle so I turn to see Polly playing in the park with her dad.

  ‘Polly!’

‘James.’ She smiles at me waving and her dad gives me thumbs up. She runs over to me, jumps onto me and gives me a huge cuddle.

‘I miss mum.’ She whispers in my ear.

  ‘So do I darling.’

We have a little chat, Polly is taken home and I continue to sit there thinking about life and what I’m going to do next. I walk home head bowed feeling depressed, yet still smoking another cigarette.

I walk through the door to see Kelly standing holding an envelope.

  ‘What is it I ask?’

‘It’s addressed to you.’ She looks anxious. I quickly open the letter, which to my surprise reveals my inheritance in an obscene amount. When my mum first started her operation she opened up an account for our future and this is the result.

I run to my room slamming the door behind me, I can’t help but think how excited I was about all this money. The feelings are mixed because I had to lose my mum to get it. I look out the window up to the clear blue sky and say a thank you prayer to my mum and told her I still love her and no matter what, she’ll always be my mum.
