Read Kylie in the City #1 Page 8

  Chapter 6

My roommates and I were late getting to church the next day. We quietly found seats in the back of the chapel trying not to disturb those around us. A low hum of whispers began buzzing around us after we were seated which wasn’t abnormal in a congregation full of singles. It just seemed to be a little more active than what was the norm.

I felt a tap on my shoulder. I turned around to find my friend, Emma, ready to whisper in my ear.

“There are some rumors going around about you, Rach, and Meg,” she whispered.

  My heart skipped a beat.

“Like what?” I asked hoping it wasn’t what I thought it was.

  It was.

“A bunch of guys have been talking. They’re saying that you three are the ward bicycles, and you’re going from guy to guy just to make out with them.”

  “Oh… crap.”

I was mortified. Our “Date-like-a-Man” plan apparently didn’t work for us like it did with the guys. The double standard was seriously annoying. They could do whatever they pleased and make-out with whomever they pleased, whenever they pleased; but we girls couldn’t even get away with it for just one week without having a giant scarlet A attached to us.

I leaned over to Rachel who was sitting next to me and whispered, “We need to abort the ‘Date-like-a-Man’ plan stat.” She looked at me with wide eyes. I continued, “Guys are talking and it’s not pretty.”

She pursed her lips, “Figures,” she said tersely and then leaned over to Megan to relay the message.

Megan leaned around Rachel to catch my eye and mouthed, “Really?”

I nodded and shrugged mouthing back, “Yep.”

She leaned back in her chair and raised a hand to her mouth. Fingertips placed on her mouth always meant she was embarrassed, and I truly felt for her. Out of the three of us she was the least likely to do anything stupid or embarrassing. She was so level headed. I knew she was dying of humiliation.

We sat there in silence listening to the whispers around us through Sacrament Meeting when I felt my phone buzz. I had a text.

I fished it out of my bag to see that it had been Damon. Great, probably just rubbing it in. I opened the text to see his message.

“Sorry about everything getting out. For what it’s worth, I have your back if you need it.”

I read it again. He wasn’t being a jerk? He had my back?

  Ooookaaay…

I looked around to see if I could find him in the congregation. He was across the chapel and had noticed that I had spotted him. He shrugged his shoulders, as if asking if I received his text. I nodded back and he smiled turning away to listen to the rest of the meeting.

I didn’t know why he was trying to be nice to me now, but whatever. We spent the rest of church enduring the whispered rumors, and so we firmly decided that the “Date-like-a-Man” plan had been an astronomically bad idea and it would never be put to the test again. We had also decided that we wouldn’t help enable the guys being lazy when it came to dating. The girls in the ward were just as much of the problem as the guys because we were all letting it happen.

We would just have to figure out a different way to get actual dates… respectfully.

Later that night back at our apartment, we waited for Elle, Jake’s sister and our new roommate, to show up to pick up her key. We were excited at the prospect of having someone new and she seemed totally sweet when I had talked to her over the phone.

  The intercom buzzed.

Rachel got it and buzzed her up. A knock sounded at the door a minute later, and Meg and I got up off the couch and walked over as Rachel opened the door.

Elle was the most beautiful girl I had ever seen. Seriously. And I wasn’t the only one who had noticed. Standing behind Elle and her brother were Eli and Damon.

“Hi, I’m Elle,” she said extending her hand. She shook our hands as we took in the scene that had graced our front door.

“Hey girls, sorry about all the people, but they insisted on coming,” Jake said shrugging.

It was apparent that Eli and Damon were completely enamored with Elle. I had never seen either of them be that charming with anyone. Well, at least not with me, anyway.

I glanced at my roommates and I could see that they were thinking the exact same thing. We were all clearly worried. With Elle now in the ward and also our roommate, our opportunities for dating would now be totally and completely nonexistent.

  Apparently Karma downright hated us.

But I also knew, without a doubt, that we would find a way to survive dating in this crazy city despite our recent debacle and our new gorgeous roommate. I did come here to prove to myself that I could make a great life in NYC, and that was exactly what I was going to do.
