  She looked over at Cody, and he was sound asleep. She got a blanket off the bed, and pulled it over him.

  The next morning he awoke to a bright sunrise, the sun bathing the small yard in light. He unloaded the food from the van, and brought that inside. He brought the last load just as she was coming out of the bedroom.

  “You sure were romantic last night.” She looked sourly at him.

  “I guess I was a little worn out.”

  “Sit and I’ll fix us a bowl of fruit for breakfast.”

  When she had the bowls of canned fruit on the table in the small dining nook, he sat down, and began eating hungrily. “Do you think we should go back to Big Bear, and let Dale know what’s happening?” He asked around a mouthful of peaches.

  “No, let that ass sit up there, and play survivor. I don’t want to see him again.”

  “What about the boys?”

  “What about them? They wanted to make their own decisions. Our boys have grown up, and there’s not a thing we can do about it.”

  “I guess. Dale has been more of a father to Trevor than I ever was.”

  They finished the fruit at the same time, she took the bowls, and tossed them into the sink, and then walked to the door with him to look out at the hills dotted with oak. The dog walked over to also look as if it were doggy business. She turned to him, and said, “Kiss me big boy.”

  He tenderly kissed her. There was the faint taste of peaches, and something else. Love. The country song they had heard on the desert went though his mind, Yeah, long time gone, you betcha.
