  "I know." He steeled himself to continue. "But when I say I don't want to lose you, Olivia, I do mean that." He let the declaration hang there for exactly three seconds before he had to add, "Where else would I find an investigator to work with me?"

  She laughed and shook her head.

  "I know you said you feel fine," she said after a few steps, "but can I ask you a favor?"

  "Anything."

  "Monday night, let's work late. Until about eleven p.m."

  "Forty-eight hours post-pixies?"

  "Humor me, okay?" She leaned her head against his shoulder for just a second. "I wouldn't want to lose you, either." A two-second pause. "Where else would I find someone to hire me?"

  He gave her a smile for that, and they continued out of the cemetery.
