finished with them?’
Froggy looked at Squeak and sneered, ‘Usually just a few little pieces of fur or maybe a bit of tail.’
The three mice looked visibly sickened.
Squeak turned to Louise and Rolo. ‘We must find something that will look like our remains.’
Froggy asked, ‘Do you have any old shoelaces or bits of old fur coats?’
Squeak knew there was a store room where the usher keep all the items people left behind. ‘Rolo come with me. Louise you look after Froggy.’
Squeak and Rolo started scampering to the store room. Louise could be heard berating Froggy, ‘You squashed my tail! That’s no way to treat a lady!’
In the store room Squeak and Rolo found an old fur handbag and a leather bracelet. A quick session of chewing and they had some pieces for Froggy.
As they made their way back to the theatre they could hear Louise talking, ‘And Robbie is just so talented.’
Froggy looked relieved to see Squeak and Rolo. Squeak went up to Froggy, showed him the bits of fur and bracelet. ‘Will these do?’
Froggy said, ‘Let me chew them.’
Squeak placed a piece of fur in front of Froggy, who chewed it for a few minutes and then spat it out. A soggy mass of wet smelly fur and skin lay on the floor. ‘Looks like a dead mouse to me. Now let me have the piece of leather.’ He chomped for thirty seconds then spat out the piece of leather. ‘There you go. One mouse tail.’
Squeak explained, ‘The plan is we’ll let Mr Rae see us then you chase us, we disappear from sight and you come back with the fake pieces of dead mouse. If you agree we’ll release you.’
Froggy nodded.
Squeak looked Froggy in the eye. ‘Swear on your mother’s life that you will honour our agreement,’ adding as confidently as he could, ‘and remember we can trap you again.’
Froggy answered, ‘I swear. Now you three mice have to swear that after your fake deaths you’ll keep out of sight.’
The three mice said in unison, ‘We swear.’
People’s voices could be heard coming into the theatre.
Squeak ran forward and quickly chewed through Froggy’s bonds. ‘Let’s get on with it.’
Squeak ran out into the theatre as Froggy wriggled free from his bonds. Just then the theatre manager and Mr Rae walked in. Squeak walked out in front of them and heard Mr Rae shout, ‘Froggy! Get him!’
Froggy bounded after Squeak, who ducked behind a chair. Moments later Froggy came back chewing on a bit of old fur handbag. Mr Rae grinned. ‘Well done Froggy.’
The process was carried out twice more. Each time Mr Rae beamed even more. After the third fake mouse death, Mr Rae eagerly asked, ‘Well Froggy, was that all of them?’
Froggy nodded.
‘You have saved the honour of the company. You’ll have the finest fish supper!’
The theatre manager interrupted, ‘Don’t go. I’ll put on a movie and make some food. Would Froggy like some beef burgers?’
Froggy nodded and licked his lips.
‘What film would you like to watch Mr Rae?’
‘Have you got any old cartoons? They always make me and Froggy laugh.’
‘No problem. Would you like something to eat?’
‘I’d love some toffee coated popcorn.’
‘Make yourselves comfortable and I’ll get your treats.’
Twenty minutes later Froggy and Mr Rae were sitting in the theatre. Froggy was eating some freshly cooked beef burgers, while Mr Rae was munching through a tub of toffee coated popcorn.
Sitting directly above them on the rail were the three mice. Froggy looked up, saw Squeak and winked. After thirty minutes Rolo started sniffing the air. He leant over the rail edge, his eyes fixed on the tub of toffee coated popcorn, and licked his lips.
Squeak saw Rolo and rolled his eyes. ‘Not again!’
