  About the Author

  1. Get that boy to the Doctor and quick!

‘You’re not going to school like that!’ cried Mrs Hollett when Morris appeared at the breakfast table.

This did not surprise him, he’d noticed that his skin had a sort of green tinge to it, and he was seeing three of everything, which made getting dressed and brushing his teeth difficult.

Dad had taken a rather dramatic reaction when he saw his son, he suddenly decided he was late and ran out of the door with a slice of toast in his mouth and only turned back to splutter loudly, ‘Get that boy to the Doctor and quick!’ through the letterbox.

Morris noticed the odd looks he was getting as they walked down the street; people couldn’t take their eyes off of him – some crossed the road with bemused and worried expressions and Morris watched one old lady walk straight into the back of an open removals van, which wouldn’t have been a problem really but the removals men were so transfixed by Morris themselves that they had shut the door and driven off before the lady could get out.

Actually he quite enjoyed the attention, as it had its benefits – Mr Timely the Postman didn’t ruffle his hair annoyingly like usual and the dog at number 73 didn’t bark, but took one look then ran away whimpering.

The waiting room was jam packed at the Doctor’s; people were sniffing, coughing and looking sorry for themselves and there wasn’t a spare seat. However, one look at the now multi coloured Morris and those closest to him suddenly appeared livelier and left their seats. A ripple of worry threaded its way through the room and all of a sudden several patients were declaring themselves fit and leaving with a spring in their step.

With a shrug Morris sat and looked at those brave enough to stay and sit on the opposite side of the waiting room. He noticed that everyone had become extremely interested in the magazines they were reading. Some held them in front of their faces and stole the odd look at him from the top, the side or even the bottom and for one moment all the magazines seemed to be whispering – only for it to stop suddenly while the readers took a brave look – then they’d hide again and the hushed chatter would resume excitedly. Some patients made their excuses to stand in the cramped entrance hall and glanced nervously around the door; others even refused to wait indoors and were looking through the waiting room windows from the outside.

‘HOLLETT!’ boomed Doctor Wimple over the intercom.

They left the room and the bravest of the few, and those really sick, took a sigh of relief and started to breathe again.

‘JUMPING JIGGLESTICKS! Have you been bathing in berries boy?’ screamed Doctor Wimple with a laugh.

‘He’s purple now but he’s been changing colour all morning Doctor. And he’s seeing three of everything as well,’ said Mrs Hollett.

‘Hmmm, open your mouth boy,’ said the Doctor. As soon as he took a look, the colour from his face turned a pale shade of white and he covered his mouth and started to cower, then tried to hide behind a large cheese plant in the corner of his room.

‘Errr, do you think it’s serious?’ asked Mrs Hollett.

‘Take a look at it…his tongue!’ said the Doctor desperately.

  Morris stuck his tongue out.

‘Why that’s a lovely shade of blue!’ smiled Mrs Hollett.

‘It was yellow earlier,’ said Morris.

‘Blue…yes! Blue…yellow!? Yes it’s serious,’ wheezed the Doctor.

‘What is it Doctor?’ said Mrs Hollett, who was now becoming a little bit worried.

‘Just don’t come any closer…he’s got to go to St Vernon’s – the Strange and Unusual Diseases Ward!’

  ‘But why?’ asked Morris.

‘You’ve got Yiddle’s!’ cried the Doctor desperately.
