Two days went by and the reports continued to come in from the techs downstairs. Not as prolific and not as earth shattering, but once the earth was shattered everything else was just a minor aftershock. Everything pointed to this being a huge case when it was broken open.

News of his investigation reached the captain who called him in for a quiet reminder that unless positive proof could be obtained, this was all still theory, circumstantial evidence that was years old and possibly unrelated. Seven hundred and eighty million to one or not, the system still gave due process to the accused and every convenience of reasonable doubt. There was still room for reasonable doubt. Strange circumstances building up to point in a direction that had no proof. None at all. Not even the first bit.

Finnegan had left the Captain's office having been duly placed on notice. Embarrassing the department, or any police force anywhere, for that matter, would not be allowed. He had to step with careful feet from now on. And he was being watched.

It was not just the higher ups Finnegan had to beware of. Every cop in the precinct had gotten wind of the investigation. It was not popular. A case like this would make every police force involved look like a bunch of keystone cops, if it could be proved. Just the suggestion of it would damage the confidence the public had in their local cops. Everyone concerned would be watching to see what he did next. At least he had no threat of it leaking out. Even if it was proved, every possible precaution would be taken to make sure it was handled as quietly as possible. No cop who knew of the investigation would leak it.
