Read No Place to Lay My Head Page 3

matter - this is what I want," he confirmed. "The price will be worth it. Come, Juliet, it's time to celebrate!"

In the kitchen he found a corkscrew and opened the Chateau Latour. As the deep red liquid poured into the crystal glasses, the rich fragrance rose and spread through the room, tantalizing my taste buds.

"Prosit'!" he said, "to Juliet, my clever and beautiful estate agent!"

  "Oh, Jaromir," I protested feebly.

"To my new home!" he amended with a wicked grin.

We didn't sit down, but wandered the house once more, together appreciating what fine work had been done in the conversion. Oak beams were abundantly present, and the predominant theme was wood and stone. The decor wasn't strictly by the book, and varied from Victorian through Edwardian to modern - but whoever had been responsible had managed to avoid letting it clash. Everything looked like it belonged there. Wherever we went I could see Jaromir touching, trying things, making the place his own. The curtains in the living room opened and closed, the lights dimmed and brightened. In the crypt he traced the engraved text in a plaque on the wall, and on the stairs he ran a possessive hand over the heavy banister.

Jaromir carried the bottle with us, and refilled our glasses before we went upstairs. The glorious wine was warming me nicely - too nicely, I thought, eyeing his bottom as he led along the landing. The bathroom was completely modern, in pale granite and glass. We came back to the master bedroom at last, my heart beating faster and adrenalin leaking into my system. Jaromir found a switch behind the burgundy curtains and the rose window blazed into life.

Stunned by beauty I sank onto the foot of the enormous bed. The colours were just amazing. There must be a light mounted outside, I realised, especially so that the stained glass could be enjoyed at night. From the window Jaromir turned towards me, beaming, holding his arms out to each side. 'Look what I've done', his gesture said, 'isn't it wonderful?'

Something about the way I was looking at him must have registered, because his gaze suddenly sharpened, the way a cat's eyes narrow when she sees a bird on the ground. I stood up, excitement mounting together with a little warning voice screaming at me faintly in the back of my mind. I didn't know whether I was thinking of running away from him or towards him.

Jaromir was looking at me in that clinging little dress, and he wasn't thinking about what a great estate agent I was. I licked my lips, and the heat in the pit of my stomach spread through me. He drank the last of his wine, his eyes never leaving me, and set the glass down on a side table.

No, I thought to myself, this mustn't happen... but I knew it was too late.

He glanced back at the window as he strode towards me, saying, "It seems the sun has risen, and is warming us out of winter past!" The rainbow lights of the rose window licked over us.

His dark eyes filled my view as he reached me, his arms going around me, his hungry lips claiming my mouth. My desire was inflaming him as much as it was me, and it had been so long...

My arms were around his neck, clinging to him. I felt his hands lifting the hem of the little dress and I was lost. I pulled back from his kiss a moment to gasp, "Jaromir, I'm so sorry." My fangs were descending, the predatory fire flaring through my veins, and I buried my face in the hollow of his neck.

As I took him I thought to myself that at least this time no one would come looking for my victim. This time.
