  “They’re tofu-eating sun-worshippers. Nothing is organized to suit you. Nothing is convenient for you.”

  Angel said nothing.

  “Beside which, it must be like walking through a minefield every day, seeing people together, oblivious of the horrors. Building lives, making plans.”

  Angel looked at him.

  “Able to make love to one another without worrying about going to hell. The ones who aren’t Catholic, anyway.”

  “Doyle,” Angel said tiredly.

  “Well, it’s nice to know you admit it. A vampire with a soul . . .” He shrugged. “You’re an odd duck.”

  Angel lifted his beer.

  “Yes,” he said. “For a while, anyway.”

  Maybe forever.

  “To Ireland,” Angel said.

  Doyle smiled faintly and raised his glass.
